M38 Swedish mauser scope bases

I'm looking for a set of scope bases for a M38 Swedish mauser. Does anyone know of a supplier that provides a set? I do not want a scout scope style mount.

I found these at Brownells but haven't been able to decode all the info to know which set to order.

Anyone have a M38 with a scope? If so which bases are you using and how do they fit? Photos would be great.

The chart indicates the S55 for the rear, and the S46 for the front.

Mauser – HVA, Swedish 96 small ring. S55: Rear; S46: Front.

Is the rifle already drilled and tapped for bases?

Thanks for sorting through that! I have found conflicting info as well concerning if it is a small or large ring.....

It has not been drilled and tapped but that is the next step in my plan. I've read some info that indicates that the thick band around the stripper clip receiver will have to be machined down to the same size as the surrounding receiver but i'm hoping i don't have to do that. I rather not get into re-blueing etc.

Find a smith who is good at M38's.

The receivers are very hard and not easy to drill or tap. It can and has been done of course, but you will have a better outcome with a smith experienced in the peculiarities of these actions.

The rear base should fit behind the charger hump without having to alter anything. There are also 1 piece bases for the small ring M96/M38 available, but two piece bases will give you more thumb room to load the magazine.
You really should have a gunsmith drill and tap, because all it takes is one screwup to ruin the action. If you drill too deep in the front and hit the chamber the barrel's junk, and too far back can hit the bolt lugs. Break a tap in the hole, can ruin your day too, as can drilling off center.
Unless you have machine skills that you didn't mention, leave the D&T to professionals, because those M38's are too nice to ruin.

Thanks for all the response! I didn't mean to indicate that I was going to attempt to drill and tap it myself. I'm in search of a good gunsmith in my area (Huntsville Alabama)now but so far have not been able to locate anyone.

Has it already been sporterized,,,, or are you going to drill on an unaltered m/38???

There are scout scope type mounts that let you add a scope without sending yourself to Swede collectors hell.

When you put a scope on a m/96, m/96-38, or a m/38 you are basically turning that rifle into a m/41. If you are going to drill & tap it do it right, here is another mount if you did not like the first I posted.

You would only turn a m/96 into a counterfeit M-41b (not a m/38 since they were never made into m/41s) by using a real M41b mount, drilling the correct holes in the receiver side and modifying the stock to except the mount... And THEN by installing a correct scope. All of which involves parts that cost much more than the rifle is worth.

Have it drilled for the one piece base. Using that hole spacing,you can use either a 1 pc or 2 pc bases. If you have it drilled specifically for 2pc bases,you will likely be stuck with that as a 1 pc base may not line up with the holes.

Hey guys thanks for all the input. I finally located a gunsmith today that says he has drilled and tapped 100's of mausers. I'll be making a vist to see him soon.

Update:

Made a visit to the gunsmith over the weekend.

The S55: Rear Weaver Grand Slam base will not work even though it says on the package that it is for a Mauser – HVA, Swedish 96 small ring. The contour on the bottom of the S55 does not match the top of the receiver and the base is so long that it will not allow the bolt to function. I'm sure with some work a machinist could make it work. Just wanted to give everyone a heads up that it isn't just a bolt on item. The S46 for the front works fine.

Thanks for all the help and input from everyone. I’m not taking exception to all the info I just wanted to let everyone know so it might help someone else in the future.

By the way the gunsmith had a set of Lepould bases that fit perfectly. Once I get my gun back and they are mounted I’ll let everyone know the model numbers.
