IMG_1157.JPG View attachment 804015 View attachment 804015 I ran short of Remington FMJ 38 special at the range today and bought a box of Magtech 158 gr. LRN 38 special at the range. I was shooting a GP-100 357 mag revolver. It was extremely smoky and after 25-30 rounds extraction got difficult and the cylinder was getting tight when releasing. The gun was clean as a whistle when I started. When I ran a patch of solvent though the barrel I could feel it hanging up on lead in barrel. I got pieces a lot of big pieces of lead out and had to use some chore boy copper on the brush to get it all out. Is it just my gun that doesn't digest this stuff well or have others had these problems with it? It seemed to be spitting lead too.

I have never shot Magtech .38 Special ammo with a lead bullet but I have shot plenty of their FMJ 38/357 ammo. It always shot well and was not any more dirty that other ammo. The smoky you saw was probably due to the lube on the lead bullets more than anything else.

It's hard to say why you get such extreme leading because I don't know how hard their bullets are and their diameter. It probably wasn't your revolver but it's possible if everything else is eliminated.

How many shots do you have thru your GP100? If it's a relatively new gun the bore may be a bit rough, at least that's been my experience with Ruger DA revolvers. Also it may only be that Magtech lead ammo is not well lubricated.

Probably @1500 rounds of 38 special and 357 mag, almost all FMJ or semi jacketed ammo. Perfecta, Remington and some Winchester white box for target shooting with no issues. I shot a box of Remington FMJ before the Magtech and practically no smoke and little blackening of the gun. My left hand was black by the time I got done with 50 rounds of Magtech. Whatever the reason I won't shoot Magtech again. It took way too much time to clean and remove lead. Kind of strange though because so many folks like it and claim it shoots as clean as other factory brands.

Not a big fan of Magtech, I prefer to stick with the big 3 American makers (which, I'm sure includes components or assembly elsewhere, at times.)

With Ron on the lubrication of that batch. May call Magtech and let them know your experience with the batch-lot number.

I'm shot maybe 100 rounds of both .38sp and .357 mag from Magtech as well as probably 500 rounds of .45ACP. I've never had an issue other than their boxes seem to open up and spill easier than others if I drop one!

Like I said above, the smoke you saw was most likely the lube on the cast bullets but all cast bullets have to be lubed and will smoke much more than a FMJ bullet.

In order for a revolver to shoot lead well, the throats need match the bore. Undersized throats can lead to the extreme leading you experienced, as can bullets not matched to the throats/bore. The cause of leading is almost impossible to determine when one does not know what bullet diameter, and bore/throat dimensions are.

I had a similar result with magtech in 44mag. Best part of that ammo was reloading it with Missouri bullets with my load.

Shot it out of a smith Wesson 629 classic. 25 rounds and the leading was noticeable. The pistol does have quite a few thousand rounds through it and have never had leading like that ever.

Make sense though, that's why we're test ammo with the guns we own. No guarantees yours will act like mine

I’m not one to put down anyone’s choice of ammunition or gun, but I had a G32 handgrenade on me while using magtech ammo. I got very lucky not being hurt. But I won’t buy their products anymore.

Magtech ammo is so-so, it's priced low for a reason. Their FMJ stuff is good, but their lead bullets, idk why, but they don't shoot as well as their jacketed bullets do. I had good results with a 90 grain SJHP .32 they make, but their 98 grain LRN .32 didn't shoot as well.

Try Armscor, PPU, or Fiocchi .38 next time, better manufacturers.

Ive been using Magtech ammo in my .454 Casull for years.
Its the most accurate I can find for that gun. Shot PLENTY of hogs and deer with it out to 100 yards

C6FD42A4-AB5F-4E70-8DAC-65CF47C6FF1A.jpeg i’m very happy with magtech 38 cbc shorts. alongwith with wadcutters the shorts make shooting a 38 snubbie a dream. btw the shorts fit fine in a speedloader, i just didn’t feel like taking them out of the speedstrip.
