Police: Man kills wife, 3 kids after argument over chores

Thursday, December 15, 2005; Posted: 12:28 a.m. EST (05:28 GMT)

Police say the couple's three daughters -- ages 10, 4 and 20 months -- were strangled.

FORT WAYNE, Indiana (AP) -- A man accused of killing his family told police he beat and strangled his wife and killed their three young daughters after the couple argued about household chores, according to court documents.

Police found Simon Rios, 33, on the front porch of his home after getting a suicide call early Tuesday. Inside, they discovered blood in the living room and Rios' wife and their three children dead in a bedroom.

Rios pleaded not guilty Wednesday to four preliminary counts of murder and two counts of moving a body. He was jailed without bond.

Autopsies showed the girls -- ages 10, 4 and 20 months -- had all been strangled. Their mother, identified as Ana L. Casas, died of a blow to the head and strangulation, the coroner said.

Rios told police he and his wife argued after she arrived home from work about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, according to a probable cause affidavit. He said he hit her with a steel pipe, then strangled her with an extension cord, the affidavit states.

He then strangled one of the girls with his hands and used an extension cord to kill the other girls, according to the affidavit.

Neighbor Nancy Gater said Simon Rios worked at a factory but had lost his job this year.

The bodies were found a day after authorities searched the neighborhood for clues to the disappearance of a 10-year-old girl. Police spokesman Mike Joyner said that police did not find a connection between the cases when they questioned Rios, but that he is a possible suspect.

Rios had a previous conviction in Allen County for misdemeanor domestic battery in 2003, but friends said they had seen no signs of trouble in the family.

Michael Guzman, who described Rios as a friend, said he had never heard Rios raise his voice to his children or speak ill of his wife.

"Everybody who knows him loves the guy," he said.

Very sad. Well, at least he didn't use a gun. It would be so much worse if he had shot them rather than strangling them. :uhoh:

Although, perhaps she could have defended herself and her children if she has access to a gun. Oh wait, what am I thinking? Guns are never used successfully for self defense.

Nope, according to the brady campaign the gun would have just been magicly taken from her, and used against her

Thats a sad story, and it goes to show that people don't need firearms to commit murders.

Soon, the law will require that extension cords either be too robust to bend and use to strangle somebody, or they be too weak and break.

The "good news" is that

he did not use a gun; he used the proverbial "common household items;" pipe and extension cords.

Register THEM and impose a waiting period! :scrutiny:

It's a shame that we have to look upon this tragedy, and say "whew, at least he didn't use a gun". The politicization of every gun crime by the antis has made me very wary when reading the news. It's the sad but true state of affairs in this country.

I find myself doing the same thing whenever I hear of a plane crash; hoping it's not one of our domestically produced jetliners (I'm an aerospace engineer).

It would help if that included the coiled cord of police radio microphones. Well it would have for Joe Love but he's been dead for a while, nm.

12 years ago, I lived 2 blocks from the Rios home. Our city also had a young girl that came up missing a week ago while walking to school that lived 2 blocks down the same street. No connection has been made to Rios at this point.

Rash of strangulation murders here. Last murder in my city was allegedly with a dog chain (finished job with a concrete block).

Wonder how Sarah Brady and VPC intends to combat strangulation? Register forearms and hands? Ban assault cord? Outlaw men? Regulate Brazilian Jiujitsu?

Evil lies in the heart of man, not inert mechanical devices.

They couldn't possibly care less about violent crime. Their only ambition is to disarm the law-abiding.

But they could advocate banning marriages. That way there wouldn't be any husbands to strangle their wives. If they ban children, then there'd be no off-spring to strangle either. What a safer world we'd be in if they succeed.

As of yesterday at 1:30 pm, city police announced that they found the little girl dead south of town and Rios is the suspect.
