He was aiming for a cat, but missed. I am surprised this managed to make national news, but I guess hey have to portray guns as evil tools that hurt people, even when the intent is not there. Be aware of your backstop is the message here I suppose. Especially when shooting those darned .22 caliber shotguns!

Why do so many people who do something dumb go on camera........Holy hell, aren't they ever thinking about how damn stupid they and their irresponsible actions look? I guess Jerry Springer wouldn't have any guests if people actually thought it through before going on camera.

<sigh>

Gotta love those reporters!
A few years back, there was some sort of street altercation in our town, and the female TV reporter said that the assailant pulled a 25mm pistol from his pocket.
Now, I'm not particularly recoil-shy, but I'm not sure I would want to fire a 25mm pocket pistol.
At least, not more than once! :rolleyes:

Here is a little analogy. A few years back here in Ohio an elderly gentleman was weed whacking with an older weed whacker that used a steel small chain. His granddaughter was playing in close proximity. A single small link detached and struck his granddaughter in the temple of her head. The single tiny link killed the child.

While this was a tragedy resulting in a child's death the story hardly went national news.

Now here we have a grandfather who fires a gun and I have no clue as to 22 shotgun unless the child was struck by bird shot fired from a .22 rifle but that is here nor there. The point being this is national news. Now in one story the tool was a weed whacker and a child was dead in the second story a child was wounded requiring a band aid so you tell me? Every day in this country children die and many are senseless. Why is it the injuries or deaths we read about on a national basis seem to involve a gun?

Stories like this serve no other reason that for the media and anti gun lobby to use as a platform to promote their agenda. It does not get any simpler.

For the guys that never heard of 22 smoothbores.
Ammo was originaly a crimped all brass shell. Most guys now know of CCI's lastic tipped ammo . heres some rifles mainly old but a video of a new made rifle.

I want one of them 22 cal. shotguns...............

Don't know if it's still a catalog item or not... But Marlin used to make, what they called a "Garden Gun", a bolt action smoothbore .22 WMR shotgun.

Idiots like this guy, who was shooting at a cat and instead shot his granddaughter, give the rest of us a bad name. Besides, why the heck did he want to shoot at a cat?

It's because those sources don't strike a chord with the collective unconscious of our society. With weedwhacker accidents, or car accidents, the object involved is either an "household item" or something which we can't see ourselves living without. They can't see it happening to themselves. Or they recognize the danger and compartmentalize it as an acceptable risk.

We can't live without our cars, and the urban planning since the post-war rise of suburbanization/white flight has exacerbated it. So we don't have a problem with a car crash that kills 15 people but we do care about a shooting that happened days before where 12 people died.
