So did the shooter here do the right thing? I'm not asking if it was a righteous shoot- it obviously was- but what would you do?

Under Washington law, the shooter's in the clear- hasn't been formally announced yet but when the cops tell you to go home after killing a man the outcome's pretty certain.

Man shot to death as he kills ex-wife

By BRAD WONG AND SCOTT GUTIERREZ
P-I REPORTERS

A 39-year-old man fatally stabbed his ex-wife early Sunday just before he was shot and killed by another man trying to save the victim, Seattle police said.

It happened during a party at a Veterans of Foreign Wars hall in the 9100 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Way South.

Rinthya Brooks, 33, a Seattle mother of four, was pronounced dead when police arrived about 1 a.m.

Seattle police briefly detained the 32-year-old man who shot Brooks' ex-husband. He had a valid concealed weapons permit for a handgun he was carrying and was released after homicide detectives questioned him, Seattle police spokeswoman Renee Witt said.

"He was a bystander and saw this guy basically stabbing this woman and decided to step in and do something about it," Witt said.

It wasn't the first time Brooks' ex-husband had attacked her, according to court records.

In March, her husband, Santos Arriola-Rochez, was charged with domestic violence in King County District Court in Burien, prompting a judge to sign a no-contact order between him and the victim. Brooks filed for divorce in the same month, and it was made final July 6, court records say.

A warrant for Arriola-Rochez's arrest was issued May 30 after he missed a sentencing hearing on the domestic violence case. His sentencing was pending, as the court awaited proof that he'd completed a court-ordered evaluation, court records say.

Early Sunday, he pushed his way into the VFW hall and stabbed the victim multiple times in front of dozens of people who were celebrating, police said.

Medics took Arriola-Rochez to Harborview Medical Center, where he died later from his wounds, Witt said.

The King County Medical Examiner's Office was expected to confirm Monday the identities of the suspect and victim after autopsies.

Another person was stabbed during the melee, but he was not seriously hurt. He drove himself to the emergency room at Virginia Mason Hospital and Medical Center in Seattle, Witt said. He was not related to the suspect or victim, police said.

Brooks was born in Honduras and worked at a local hospital. She has a sister and other family members in Seattle, said her friend, Martha Martinez.

Martinez said she last saw Brooks just before July Fourth, when Brooks was planning a get-together to celebrate.

"She was a very giving person. She gave to anybody who asked," she said. "She was a wonderful person, the type you want to be around."

Of course he did the right thing... too bad he wasn't able to shoot the SOB a few minutes sooner, saving the woman's life...
