On the way to pick up me 1895 from the gun store shortly. I'm having trouble deciding what kind of sights I want. I bowhunt 99.9% of the time, but I just had to have this rifle. I will be using it mostly for plinking, if plinking is the correct term with a .45-70, and maybe hunt WT deer a time or two each year. I imagine most of my shooting will be <150 yards. Probably less than 100 yards.

I like the look of the the peep and ghost ring sights. Haven't used them though.

Also kicked around the idea of a 2-7X33 scope. I found a heck of a deal on a Nikon Prostaff. When scoping a 1895, how much eye relief do you want?

I don't really want to go with a scout setup. If I scope, what would you guys recommend for rings and bases?

I have peep sights on my lever actions and will never mount scopes on them. One of the advantages of these compact rifles in the ability to wrap ones hand fully around the receiver (with thumb over the top) for easy carry. Scoping ruins this. Aperture sights are extremely accurate and are used by target shootings for shooting at hundreds of yards.

When I want better long range accuracy I will reach for a scoped bolt-action rifle. Scoped have their place and I used them a LOT, but not on my levers. Never.

why not have both? look at the wild west guns website for their scout scope mounting system...i have this system with the peep sights on my 1895 gs. the "rail" is very small and using warne QD rings you can have the best of both.
