I aquired a Mauser Modelo Argentino 1909 it also says Deutche Waffen-Und Mutionfabriken Berlin. It is converted to .243 and is an excellent shooter 1/2 inch at 100 yds with a 100 gr bullet at 3100 fps. I have no idea what the twist is on the barrel but the history is the owner who passed away used to shoot competition at the Mare Island CA. range. (This was a US sub base). From what I gleaned on the internet this seems to be a 98 mauser. It currently has what looks like the original wood stock that has been releived to float the barrel. It is not bedded.

My question is is this a 98 mauser? and would the Bell and Carlson Varmint mauser 98 stock fit it. These eliminate the need for conventional bedding. Is it even worth it?

It is a '98 action and, with the hinged floorplate, one of the more desirable models. Whether it fits an aftermarket stock really depends on the barrel contour but there's a good chance that it will because the original barrel had steps and yours likely does not. And, are you unsatisfied with one-half inch groups?

No, not really. I originally worked the load for hunting whitetail. The 100 gr bullet pushed to 3100fps at the lower recommended charge so I kept it there. I would suspect it is capable of better grouping if I adjust the powder charge. It came with a 4 ~ 12 weaver scope with parallax correction. I originally bought it with the mind of turning it into a .308 if it didn’t group well but I am happy with it as a .243. My only complaint with the stock is it feels kind of small in my hands. Thanks for clarifying it.
