I was still in SHOCK after the finale of Battlestar Galactica last night, so I sat in my chair and caught the first few minutes of "The Dresden Files."

Main character Harry Dresden comes across the body of a dead P.I. in his office. The P.I.'s assistant comes across BOTH of them, thinks Harry killed the man, and pulls a gun on him. Cut to later on, after the cops get there.

She leaves, and Harry is talking to a freind in the PD about her. Seems she was convicted of a felony (I forget what  ), but has been "clean for 5 years and sober for 4."

Harry says, "so if she's a felon and pulled a GUN on me, that would be a problem..."

The lady cop says, "DID she pull a gun on you?"

Harry lies and says "No, just getting my gun/felon laws straight."

It's a remote possibility that Dresden saw the injustice of paying your debt to society but STILL losing your 2A rights forever. But the most likely result was that he was gonna blackmail the woman for the tuition he owed their P.I. firm for a class he was taking...

Just thought I'd share...and maybe see if any Dresden fans might tell me if my theory was right. I had to go to bed...!

Dresden and Guns

Haven't seen that episode yet (it's sitting on the tivo) but I have read some of the books and Harry carries a S&W chief's special with .38+p ammo in the first two books and switch to .357 after loosing the chief's special.

There are some mistakes in the books such as Det. Murphy handloading a .22lr pistol with silver bullets to take out a werewolf and some trigger happy LEOs but they are a fun read.

I've been watching the Dresden Files for a while now and generally enjoy the show; kind of a supernatural Sam Spade. It also seems to be very gun-neutral for taking place in gun-ban Chicago-land. Guns really haven't played a big part because the show is about magic, and that's what Harry and most of the people that he goes up against use for weapons.

The episode last night had very little commentray about an ex-con having a gun for protection. Apart from the line that you mentioned, there were only two others dealing with the gun. One, Harry tells the PI, "you can get in a lot of trouble for having that." and her response is "thanks, mom." At the end of the episode, Harry encourages her to take over here dead mentors career as a full time PI, and she says, "It's kind of hard to do the job if I can't carry a gun." to which Harry replies, "I might be able to pull some strings."

So while the show doesn't deal with firearms all the time, it definately didn't put a negative spin on an ex-con and a civilian needing a gun for self-defense.

P.S. and Battlestar left me pretty shook up too.

2 thoughts on last night's 'Dresden Files':

1. The books are still better, though the show is improving. If you haven't read the books, go get them now. They are very well done.

2. Was anyone distracted the whole time by Claudia Black's accent? Or, lack thereof? For the first few minutes I actually thought they had dubbed her dialog. The departure from her normal mild Aussie accent was jarring. Though she still looked extremely hot. And she's one actress who appears perfectly comfortable toting guns.

Futuristic

Sorry I stopped there. Went into relapse on my shock. Can't get the music out of my head. 2008!?!?! Oh for frak's sake.

For what it's worth; In the Harry Dresden novels by Jim Butcher, Harry carries a Model 29 .44 magnum, and an unidentified "sawed off shotgun," as needed.
