Good morning...
I am new to this forum and fairly new to the world of revolvers.

It is my hope that some members of this forum can share some insight/experiences related to MIM parts in S&W revolvers. I have two (625JM & 627PC) and in both some sort of plating is flaking off the hammer face and innards and what I would expect to be precision machined sears etc., are seemingly formed globs of that same plating material.

Yes, I'm a little upset with this technology and yes, I should have done more research before the purchase. Still, that brings me to the question of replacing parts in the lockworks of these revolvers. Can these parts be replaced with traditional case hardened parts? Has anyone else had this trouble - if so, how did you deal with it.

I should mention that I am extremely reluctant to return either gun to the factory just to have the same type of parts re-installed.

Sorry to hear of your troubles. I can't help you with regard to whether fitting better quality parts to your revolvers would be an option. I can only imagine, that doing so would be very expensive.

If it were me, I would lean towards sending the guns to S&W for warranty repair, getting them fixed, and then selling them. You could then go out and buy an older MIM free gun if that is your wish. Good luck. :)

MIM parts are good, plating bad

Simply yank the plated hammer out and buy a standard MIM hammer if your planning to do much mods to it.
The MIM stuff is good. Don't tell me there soft until you try cutting on a MIM part with a carbide cutter or file.

MIM replacement

Thanks for your responses. I appreciate the input.
I like the guns... just not the technology.

Thanks again!
