whats the highest grain a mini 14 can safely shoot?

i shot no higher than 62 gr.

also.. being in ca and all

would it be ok to put a muzzle break on my mini 14?

if so where what what kind do you recommend?

Bullet weight is of no issue as to safety, unless you're loading your own ammunition and use too much powder in trying to get the same velocity from a 70-grain as from, say, a 55-grain bullet.

Accuracy is affected by the twist rate of the barrel. A faster twist rate is required for the heavier bullets.

The only limits are (1) the bullet can't be so long that it won't fit in the magazine (and even then, you could single-load the rifle if you wanted), and (2) it can't be so long/heavy that your barrel twist rate won't stabilize it. Since most mini-14's are 1 in 9" twist, you can stabilize pretty heavy bullets (probably at least into the low 70s).

I've shot Winchester Supreme 69-gr HPBT with good accuracy (for a mini). The reason I don't use them all the time is the cost (4 or 5 times the price of 55gr FMJ).

To the best of my knowledge muzzle breaks are perfectly okay in California. They are not considered to be an evil feature.
