Hi, guys. Came home today and my dad tells me he spent 400 bucks on a mauser 98K from Mitchell"s Mausers. Anybody know much about these guys? Do I need to tell dad to cancel order? He got an ad in the American Legion mag.
Thanks

Mitchell's is well known among the surplus rifle community to be dishonest. Their rifles are refinished and sold as unissued originals. Plus, their 98K's are often actually yugo mausers. They have a very bad reputation.

Thanks guys. I might try and have dad ask for his money back. Don't know how that will work out. HE ALWAYS KNOWS BETTER THAN ME!!:D

I'll say this for Mitchell's -They are good for what they are. You get a nice looking/shooting example of the gun you order and for most people that's fine. $400 is a good price on a 98k even if it's refinished. They make great display guns as well.

I have an M48 with all the goodies and it's one of my favorite bolt Milsurps that I own.

Ultimately, that's what it boils down to: you may not get an entirely historical firearm because it's been refinished, but what you do get is a rifle that looks and shoots far better than your typical surplus. It looks and performs correct to period, so it's equivalent to an accurate period replica. They're guns to be shot, displayed, and enjoyed.

Don't say anything. You can sell it when you inherit it.

+1. The money's spent so let the old guy feel like he got something great and the Mitchell's Mausers do look nice even if they are forgeries.

Maybe y'all are right

Maybe I'll just ****!!. If he likes it, great. It is a gun we can shoot together. I guess that is all that matters. He is fired up about it so unless the gun we get is unacceptable, We'll keep it and enjoy it.

From what I hear, they're good guns, just misrepresented. I don't have a problem with refinishing an old rifle (ok, I do if it's done wrong) but I have a BIG problem with selling an M48 and telling people it's a K98.
