Hello All,
I got in the pre-64 Model 70 I posted about recently. It is a pre-war 1938 production rifle, but has been fitted with the more common post-war three position safety. Doesn't appear to be the custom Tilden safety, but a standard Winchester safety.
My question is this: are the regular safeties supposed to be silent? This one makes a click noise when operated quickly, but is almost silent when eased forward very gently. I always thought the thre position safety on the 70 was silent in operation based on what I had read, but isn't apparently. This may be because it wasn't fitted by the factory, but I don't know. I've also read in an old gun book that the pre-war flag safeties were noisy, but the later ones weren't.
The good news is that with my muzzle wear and throat erosion gauges I got readings of 0 which means the barrel ain't hurt at all, and the bore is a blinding mirror. There is a little daylight showing between the mag well and the stock, so the refinish on the stock got a little happy, but it still looks OK. It should be a good shooter, and with the refinish and drilled and tapped rear bridge the collector value is shot, so I can just enjoy it as a shooter/hunting rifle.
Anybody have any insight on the safety issue?
