Hey y'all,

I've seen some discussion around here of how the Garand was designed for specific velocity loads, and that modern cartridges of the same strength will wear the action and eventually cause problems.

Firstly, I was wondering if this is accurate information. Secondly are there modern manufactures of 30'06 that burn in the same manner as loads of the vintage of the M1? Are there perhaps lighter loads of modern ammo that are acceptable? I'm wondering if a Garand is a good choice if it can only be used with the milsurp ammo to be had from places like the CMP. Thanks in advance!

a million posts on this subject. Hornady has come out with a garand-specific load. some say "I shoot modern loads and have never had a problem" but the experts will tell you to use ammo loaded to military spec or you can bend an op-rod and/or batter your receiver.

The garand is always a good choice. ;)

You can get an adjustable gas plug from several places that will allow you to tailor your garand to function properly and safely with any .30-06 ammo.

Maybe this a good time to get into reloading. The CMP is a good choice for ammunition as already stated. Federal is also now producing spec ammunition in 30-06 and .308.
