mosin problem?

I just bought a mosin m91/30 and i have been doing my first cleaning of the rifle when i encountered a problem. I am use to cleaning pistols but rifles are new to me so when i attempted to scrub the barrel with a brush i found out it wouldn't fit. neither my brush nor my bore snake fit and both are .30 calibre rifle brushes. since a mosin is 7.62x 54 R ( i think .310 or .311) why wont these brushes fit. i would hate to have to buy new brushes. ammo fits fine and chambers (did it outside and pointed into a bucket of sand on top of dirt for saftey sake) haven't had a shot to shoot it so i dont know if theirs any problems. can somebody give me any advice or am i just doing something wrong. any advice or help is much appeciated and much needed.

I occasionally have difficulty getting a 30cal brush into my SKS, but that's almost always a bit of crud that built up. My biggest problem is usually with the wrap jag on the first pass after the brush. You might try a foaming bore cleaner first, then use a 22 cal stab-jag with a couply of patches instead of a 30 cal. there might just be too much crud for it to move. Visually check for a blockage or spot that might cause resistance.

Thats kinda odd.I've never had a problem with mine.I think FieroCDSP's answer makes a lotta sense though, about ther just being a bit much cosmoline or other 'gunk' in there.Try a 7mm brush if you have one, should be smaller enough to fit, but still close enough to the right size to be effective.

When I bought my M-44, there was so much cosmo in the barrel you couldn't see lands & grooves...it looked like a very small shotgun barrel.

It will take a while, so just buy a couple of gallons of mineral spirits, and have at..

Ditto - DON'T SHOOT IT! I use 30 cal brushes on both my Mosins, and yes, the Wolf standard bullet diameter is .310. Get rid of the cosmo in the bore, and the chamber. Lots of heavy duty degreaser, boiling water, and elbow grease.

I just bought my first rifle ever - a Mosin M44. I'd never seen (or smelled) cosmoline before, so I was a bit worried when I first examined it. Thought it might be rust. I never had any problems fitting a .30cal rifle brush through the barrel, though. It's all that green gunk that came out of the other end that I didn't like.

Anyways, it's been a little less than a week, and I've probably gone through 30 patches, and half a (small) bottle of Shooter's Choice in my spare time... It's still not sparkly clean yet, but it's close. I can't wait to finally shoot it.

I have found that a steam cleaner works well for cosmoline removal, if you have access to one. There are many cosmoline removal techniques and "products", including automotive barke cleaner. Free of cosmoline, my Mosins all "take" the .30 cal brushes/jags, so I see no reason why yours shouldn't either once the barrel has been cleaned out. As suggested, start with smaller brushes/jags and work your way up as the barrel is de-gunked.

Like said above, DO NOT shoot that gun until you clear the bore. Mineral Spirits is good but first shoot some Windex through the barrel. The Ammonia will loosen any of the corrosive primer build up that is probably there.

When I got my 91/30 the barrel was VERY clean, when my son got his M44 (from the same dealer) is was terrible!!! He had to run over 30 patches through it before it was clean.

I've heard of some armorers using SimpleGreen to clean rifles with.
Here's an idea that I've never tried but thought about once or twice...what about corking the end of the barrel and filling it with a mild cleaner, leaving the gun standing up for a few days to soak internally and melt off all the gunk. Can it be done? (Has it been done?)

i have looked down the barreland the grooves look crystal clear and are very sharp looking i ve clened it with gun scrubber, foam barrel cleaner, hoppes solvent and remington oil.my 270, brush goes right through and does some cleaning but the .30 calibre gets stuck every time and im starting to wondering if my rifle got resized if at all possible my rifle was bought from big 5 but says its from century arms. i ve run at least 20 patches through it and constaintly have foam or olvent in it. next thing i plan to try is boiling water. any more help or questions ill be glad to respond. can anybody think of anything im doing wrong ill try to take pictures later after i clean it out again.

Not to mean any offense, but are you sure it's a .30 brush? These little mistakes happen, trust me....

ya i understand i thought that to btw i checked the package and it said clearly .30 cal brush i am thiking about buying another one maybe a factory slip up if it works. but i only own 2 rifles a .270 and the mosin i have problems getting the fat part of the cleaning rod through to.

.30 cal brushes should ALWAYS go easily into a Mosin's bore. In fact, I like to use 8mm brushes on mine to get some extra bite. If you can't get a .30 brush in the barrel there may be something very wrong. Post some pics.

My 91/30 was a sewer pipe when I got it. You'll need a pencil eraser, teflon tape and brake cleaner. Wrap the tape around the eraser until its larger than the bore and shove it in the end. Stand the barrel up vertically and fill it with brake cleaner. Let it sit for about six hours, drain scrub and repeat. That'll get it nice and shiny.

ok so i bought another .30 calibre brush and still no go it doesn't fit, the brush is a hoppes 9 .30 cal rifle fusil and it got stuck again in the barrel. this time i broke a cleaning rod trying to pull it out not the stock one but rather a cheap universal rifle rod. i tried taking pics of the rifling after 25 attempt it was a no go and gave up if you have a suggestions on how to due this effectively i will try it again. i talked to the people at big 5 and they said they would take it back with a recipt. ive cleaned the **** out of this rifle and nohing is working. I have used solvent, foam barrel cleaner, gun scrubber, hot soapy water and nitro solvent. I scrubbed the hell out of it with a 7mm brush as well as a .30 cal wool mop. agin same result. ive used countless pouches and let solvent sit in the rifle for long periods then oiled it. im starting to get frustrated any more advice or should i return it and see what big 5 will do for me. is there a possibility that the barrel isnt right. im not the quiting type but this is pushing my limits.

You said the ammo will chamber ok. Take a pic of a cartridge sitting in the muzzle. Does most of the bullet fit into the muzzle? Maybe somehow that barrel is out of spec or was changed.

Make sure there's not a slight bend in the barrel.
No way should you be breaking cleaning rods trying to clean the barrel.
UNTIL YOU HAVE CHECKED THIS ( MAYBE WORTH A TRIP TO A GUNSMITH) DO NOT ATTEMPT TO FIRE IT!!!
