I recently found out that Mossberg and sons makes a inexspensive 18.5 inch barrel for the Remington 870. It can be had in matte or blued finish and is equipped with a bead.

Does anyone have any experience with these? Seems like a good deal for $100 could be just what im looking for. I have also been searching for used 20" slug barrels. It mostly depends of what I can find for cheap.

Mossberg makes a couple of barrels for 870s, IIRC there's a 24" rifle sighted smoothbore also, as well as the 18.5" riot type barrel you mention. I have seen a good number of the Mossberg marked 18.5" barrels in use, they occasionally show up for a good bit less than a C-note and people looking for a bargain snarf them up. I've only seen one with a problem, one person I knew used one on his 3-gun 870 and the barrel ring separated from the barrel. It was returned to Mossberg, they brazed it back on and as far as I know it's still in use. I have one in the barrel box, the barrel walls are a bit thinner than Remington marked equivalents but it works just fine.

Edited to add- and a rifled 24" barrel also, it seems.

Why did you buy an 870 when you can get a 500?:D Just jokeing, I'm a die hard mossberg fan, I dont care for the feel of remingtons. If the mossberg barrels cheaper, I'd go for it. I've never been let down by any mossberg products.

I had one of those barrels. It worked fine, but I noticed that the muzzle chipped after awhile. It didn't affect the performance though.
