If the Mossberg's receiver is aluminum, how can they market their 590A1's as parkerized? Are they just referring to the steel barrels being parkerized? How do they finish the receivers so they look parkerized?

Yes, only the barrel and mag tube are parkerized. I spoke to a man at a local gun store and he said that the reciever is a mat powdercoat finish, but I can not verify this.

I think it's just a tweak to the hard anodizing process to be more gray than black.

Nothing to worry about, hard-anodized aluminum is far superior to parkerized steel as far as surface protection goes.

A few years ago when I worked at Gander Mountain, a man brought in a Mossberg 500 that had been in a fire at his house. It wasn't burned-up, but the fire retardant that was sprayed on the home was very corrosive. All the steel parts were covered in a thick coat of rust. The aluminum receiver was filthy, but not rusty.

The staff gunsmith took it into his shop and scrubbed it in a chemical bath. The rust came off the barrel but the surface was badly damaged. When the gunsmith was done, the anodized aluminum receiver looked brand-new.

Funny thing about the aluminum 590 receivers is that they can be cold blued.

Weird, I know.
