So my 3" model 65 has a problem....When I cock the hammer (unloaded) and let it down with the trigger held down, the cylinder moves (not rotates) forward and back, and left to right. It shoots great, accurate and reliably, but I am worried about this shaking.

Do I need a tuneup? If so how much will it cost?

I am worried about my gun, as 3" K-frames with no lock or "ladysmith" inscription are very hard to come by. And her sister (3.25" model 66) is worried too, not wanting to be lonely in the safe without her fixed sight companion......

Forward-and-back movement is called endshake. A good gunsmith can tighten the gun up again by various means. I bought a M65 once that had excessive wiggle to it, both sideways and endshake, but my 'smith rebuilt it to acceptable tolerances again.

Those 3" K-frames are hard to come by, and they are getting more and more scarce. It's worth to put half a c-note into it to rejuvenate it. Great guns...love those three-inch Ks.

It is apparent that you have problems. The good news is that they aren't serious ones. I suspect you may also have some play between the yoke and frame when the cylinder is closed and latched. Any S&W trained armorer can quickly fix the revolver. If such a person is unavailable I would return the gun to S&W and have them fix it. If you are in the Rural South as indicated send a P.M. to Preacherman and he will provide you with the name of a first-class fixer ...

So worry not ... :D
