My AR is a RRA lower with a model1sales CAR upper and model1 Bolt Carrier Group & bolt. It's nice enough.

I've got about 300 rounds through it so far and it still is making quite a noise. When I pull back the charging handle and BCG it makes a sound like a goose honking. It's well lubed. I've never heard this out of an AR or M16 and i suspect it'll quiet down with use, but anyone have a suggestion as for where it might be rubbing?

thanks.

I'll just reply to myself here because i think i've located the problem. Pretty sure it's the buffer spring or buffer. I've lubed all that up though and I just can't get the darn thing to shut up.

The "sprong" is pretty much due to the buffer spring. Greasing it will usually quiet it down, but then you'll have to deal with a nice grease spot on your shirt from some of the stuff coming out of the hole in the buttstock screw. My advice is to just shoot it as is and after awhile, you won't notice it anymore.

Hmmm. I'm pretty familiar with the "sprong" noise on M16s. In my experience, that occurs when it is fired. I haven't noticed that sound when firing on this AR. This is just a loud "honking" sound when the BCG slides into the buffer tube when charging or manipulating the charging handle.

I know it's not a big deal. Thanks for the tip.

If you think the carrier is really scraping on the buffer tube, then take out the buffer and spring. Pulling back on the charging handle will reveal if it is indeed the carrier causing the noise.

Shhh. Everyone will want one that sounds like that!:)

Well, just pulled out my Bushy CMP gun. (My DPMS Lo-Pro isn't doing it as the buffer tube is too well lubed with lithium grease.) I do get a low level 'honk' out of it when I charge the bolt. The gun has been sitting in a safe for a few months without being fired. The sound seems to occur more (louder) on the forward motion of the bolt. It also occurs when the bolt/buffer is moving slowly (riding the charging handle).

IMO, not a big issue (actually no issue at all). As long as the gun works fine. I think the sound is occurring when, as stated, the bolt is moving slowly and the vibrations generated by the imperfections inside the tube are being rubbed by the bolt and/or buffer at just the right frequency to emit the sound. Notice if you charge the handle quickly, the sound is not there.
