I was planning on buying a Yugo SKS, but that didn't work out. Yesterday I called one of the local gunshops and found this Chinese SKS for $195. I think I did pretty good considering the Chinese ones go for a lot more around here, from what I've seen. Unfortunately I threw out my back so it will be a few days before I get to shoot it.:(

The wood is in pretty good shape, with just a few dings here and there. It does have 1 pretty good scratch on the wrist and the lacquer is cracking a little, so I'm thinking of refinishing it.

The metal is very good, with a few marks in places like the gas tube latch. The bore is absolutely perfect, like a mirror with sharp lands and grooves. Serial numbers all match, on wood and metal. Factory code is 636.

So here it is, with serial numbers smudged  I'm pretty happy, what do you guys think?

darnn. that is a beautiful SKS. I WISH I could find a nice looking chinese SKS around here. I see ones that look ok but they go for 300-350 and up. I paid 250$ for my sks and I would label it as fair. Not bad but it had a couple imperfections that stand out.

Thanks, I hear you about the price. The other gunshop in town that carries these was asking around 300-350, just like yours, so I feel pretty good about this one. Even Yugos are going for around $230 at the two shops I've seen them. This was the first rifle I've bought from this particular shop (Nebraska Gun), but it probably won't be the last. Nice guys, and they guarantee their used guns.

Don't know yet, I screwed up my back so I may not make it to the range for a few days. Hopefully it will shoot well, since the bore looks brand new.

Here's a family picture, with Grandpa (Type 53 Chinese Mosin Nagant) on top, and Junior (cheap Chinese B3 air rifle) on the left. The B3 shoots surprisingly well for a $30 airgun...

That SKS looks almost brand new... definitely better than the majority of rifles of that type you see out there. Nice catch ;)

Congratulations! Nebraska Gun is run by a good guy who prices products reasonably. I have never been able to figure out how the other store ***** Arms is able to get away with charging as much as they do.

Forgot to mention when I stripped it down to clean it the firing pin was stuck full of cosmoline - didn't want to move freely. I could push it back and forth with a little effort, but it definitely was gummed up. I'm glad I did that before shooting it. There was a little carbon on the bolt face and in the gas tube, so I'm sure it had been fired a few times before. I'm guessing it had never been stripped completely, though. After a nice bath in solvent and some oil it looks as nice on the inside as on the outside.

Thanks guys, I'm like a proud papa :)

I dry fired it a little and noticed the trigger isn't actually that bad. I've read a lot of people who say the SKS trigger is horribly heavy, but this one really isn't - maybe 6 pounds or so, just a guess. It does have a rather long travel, but you can tell right where it's going to break and take the slack up beforehand.

Now that Type 53 has an amazing trigger. Good for any rifle and shockingly good on a military one. It's light and crisp. Too bad the bore is like a sewer pipe....

EDIT:

I got on www.simonov.net and looked up the serial number...according to them, since it's 22,XXX,XXX it was manufactured in 1978. It seems hard to believe it's that old.

I know what you mean about the trigger. I have 2 Norincos, one presently for sale, and the triggers are good but different. Just before the trigger breaks, there's this little crunching noise that I can hear and feel when my cheek is on the stock. Most folks would probably hate it but it's a good tell-tale that the gun is a zillimeter from firing.

Hey AleMonkey great looking gun at a great price. I just bought one off of GB for $261.00 with all the shipping. Mine looks like yours with a few scratches. I took mine apart to clean before firing and the dern thing appears to have never been fired.

My 16 year old loves it. He likes it better than the Paratrooper model i have. Its also the first gun i have ever named.

I just ordered another 1000 rounds from ammoman for $200.
