I just picked this up yesterday:
attachment.php

She's a Romanian SSG-97. For those who don't know about them, they are a Romanian designed sniper rifle, kind of a hybrid between the Dranunov SVD and the AK. This is the Paratrooper version with the 16.5" bbl. She's chambered in 7.62x54R.

I bought it from a member of another forum. I paid $700 and got the rifle, scope, 4 mags, and 380 rounds of ammo. He was asking $650, but I gave him an extra $50 for driving over 100 miles to meet me halfway between here and there, in order to do a FTF. I figured the shipping plus transfer fees would easily be more than $50, especially if he shipped the ammo. The ammo wasn't originally included in the $650 price, so I definitly feel like I got a great deal. Heck, the ammo alone would have cost most of the $50.

I'll probably take her to the range tomorrow morning or early Friday.

My wife is going to want to speak with you. She really wants a Romak.

Awesome by the way. Any chance of getting together to shoot the little beastie?

Chris

Chris, you and Julie are always welcome to play with my toys. My mommy taught me to share.

I'm going to the Goodman's show at the fair grounds this Saturday, probably around 10. I have to be at work at 5, so we might be able to squeeze in a little time at Owl Hollow between the two if you want. Just give me a call, or drop me a line, either e-mail or pm.

nice new toy there Frank!

I picked up my first AK the other day.

where you gonna shoot friday? I'm off and was gonna go the the TWRA range on friday.

lemme know.

Tony,

Congrats on the new AK.

I'll probably just go to Owl Hollow, since it's 15 minutes from the house. Give me a call sometime and maybe we can get together. (I'd rather go to O/H and avoid the range nazi's at TWRA, but I'm flexible.)

Hey guys if you can do it on Saturday I'd like to join you. I can't on Friday.

I am all for getting up early on Saturday, hitting the show with you guys and heading down to to Owl Hollow.

Chris

Admar,

What time are you going to the TWRA range on Friday. I might be able to get there later in the day around 1600.

Chris

O/H is fine with me, either way I gotta pay $5. :)

I'm up for saturday too if that's when you can make it chris.

Then why don't we plan on either meeting at the show or just meeting at Owl Hollow if you are not going to the show.

PM me your phone number and I will do the same.

I figure we could meet at the show early 10:00 AM or so, that should give Frank plenty of time.

Chris

Those blue boxes look the same as the Czech 7.62x54R I got from AIM, are they?

Corrosive but only $60 for 800 rounds.

Very nice looking rifle.

WKW,

Yep, same ammo. Luckily, the SSG-97 has a chrome-lined bbl, so it shouldn't be a problem. $60 for 800 rounds sounds like a good deal. I figured the 380 rounds would be worth somewhere near the extra $50 I gave him.

Chris and Tony,

10 at the show sounds great, followed by a quick bite to eat en route to Owl Hollow.

I've seen that para model for sale in many gun rags, but I haven't had ac hance to handle one yet. How does it handle, shoulder, point etc. I've had pletny of experience with the full size model mind you;) I just think that paratrooper looks cool though. Of course, I generally prefer the standard length of any rifle. But, inquireing minds wnat ot know! :)

are there any problems with using heavy ball (yellow tip) in this rifle?? from what i've heard it's not a good idea..

me likey!!

The Romaks and SVDs are suppossed to shoot best with weights in the 147 grain area. I have heard that the really heavy weights can cause problems.

Chris

That is one sweet looking rifle! I would love to get my hands on a version chambered for .308!

One interesting tidbit of info about this gun:

It was imported by Tennessee Guns, in Knoxville, TN and has a really low serial number. According to the previous owner, who is from Knoxville, it was the third SSG-97 Paratrooper to be imported into the U.S.. That's kind of cool.

jobu, it seems to handle pretty well, although with the short stock, the scope is right there in your face. Using the irons with the scope mounted looks like it might result in a rubber eyepiece to the forehead.

Oooh, nice.

I'm planning to show up at the Saturday gun show to pick up a bunch of ammo and a part or two (no guns, I will not buy any new guns, I will not buy any new guns say it again Bryan I will not buy anymore guns this week ...). I'll want to look over the Romak.

Congrats on the new toy. Sweet.

Do yourself a favor Frank and loose that rubber eyepiece. Just replace it with a Butler Creek flip up lense cover.

I hate those eye pieces. They make me flinch something awful.
