My Newest Toy. Marlin 917V .17 HMR. Anyone else have one?

My newest toy.

Marlin 917V with Leupold 3x9 40mm scope and burris bipod. I wanted a different look for the standard wood stock, so I did the fleckstone treatment.

I haven't gotten out to shoot it yet, but everyone I've talked to has said they are tackdrivers.

So, anyone have any tips or comments on these rifles?

I have a Marlin 17HMR and have been very pleased with it's accuracy. 1" groups or less at a 100yds. I would like to hear your report on the new trigger system when you have the chance.

My son and I hunt with 17VS rifles, and they are tack drivers. They both wear Simmons AETEC 3.8x12x44AO scopes, and are squirrel and crow killing machines!! I have had the best accuracy with the original Hornady 17 grain ammo. Enjoy your new toy, you'll love it!!

Had one. Very nice rifle especially for the price. But I really didn't have a need so I sold it to a guy who will be dispatching varmints with it. Tackdriver indeed.

I also have a 917V and it's turning out to be a very accurate rifle. The CCI TNT ammo seems to work better than the Hornaday, at least in my rifle.

Everything is stock so far and I have added a Bushness 4-12x40 AO scope. I can get quarter-sized groups at 100 yards with just a sandbag rest. Eventually, I'll add a bipod and get the trigger smoothed out a bit.

Paid $169 at the local Wally World.

It is a tackdriver....and quite possibly the sorriest trigger I have ever felt on a factory rifle.

Still like the gun though.

I have a 917V. I put a Rifle Basix trigger in it, and that helped immensely. From what I hear, the factory trigger can be tuned up a bit, but trigger work isn't my bag so the $65 for the RB trigger was well spent. Plus, it's adjustable.

I have a 917vs wearing a Sightron SII39X42 ST. It is definitely a tackdriver but be sure to try different ammos -- mine preferred Hornady over the CCI stuff. I have not done it yet, but I am also considering the Rifle Basix trigger since the trigger could benefit from some help.

I have one and shooting grapes off golf tees at 50 yards is NOOOOO problem.

Target tip> Take kids Side walk chalk(the 1" round stuff) and cut 1/2" peices, stand them on edge and shoot. The cloud of dust lets everyone know if you hit or not.

Love mine. Definately experiment with ammo; mine also favors CCI.

I bought a 917v a few months back. I have added a bipod, Rifle Basix trigger and a Mueller Eraticator to it. I have been very pleased with the accuracy of a $180. rifle.
I own two 17HMR rifles and plan to buy another after X-mas.
They are just plain fun to shoot.
The only downside is the price of ammo.

I got mine at Wally last Febuary, just in time to whack a few squirrels with it before the season went out.

I did the "Pentel" pen spring treatment with it, and a little stonning of the sears. I went too far with it and it wouldn't hold the striker back on closing. I went back and put a little more edge on the sear, and now it has about a 1.5lb trigger with a little creep.

I have a BSA 4-16X mil-dot scope I got several years ago. (I got lucky, its a "good" one- holds zero, and tracks smoothly, and target turret adjustment return to zero well)

I get "so-so" accuracy with it. I get 1.25" 5-shot groups at 100yds. Usually 3 or 4 will be touching or nearly so, with the "stray" rounds opening things up. My best accuracy has been from one lot# of Federal 17gr, though I'm very pleased with the way the 20gr Hornady XTP's are grouping.

After the deer season runs out (or I kill 3 more for my limit -12-) I'll be finding out how the 20gr's do on squirrels. The 17gr loads are a bit "rough" on gray squirrels, even with the head shots taking some shoulder with it! The CCI 17gr h.p.'s are a little better in that regard.

BTW, the 20gr loads are running 2,425fps from my 917's 22"bbl. A bit faster than they are claiming. The 17grs. of course are running 2,650fps.

I like my 917. It's a "keeper".
