Not sure where this post belongs, here or strategies tactics and training. But I shot qualification today, and the instructor left my 13 year old son shoot the course with a ruger 22/45. He shot a 944 out of 1000. Qualification is 750. He handled himself well, no unsafe gun handling, followed instructions like an adult. I couldn't be more proud of him. Now he wants to shoot competition, may have created a monster.

My Dad and the Armorer of his Dept. let me shoot an M1A1 Thompson when I was 11. Sounds like you have a well-trained son, you should be proud. Well done!

Well done Sir, you have given him a lifelong gift. He could be doing worse things around people who are not nearly as nice. One thing though, it's gonna cost you lol!

I thank you for your kind words, and I accept some of the credit for the way he is, but I give him most of the credit. He is a good son. My circle of friends has accepted him as one of the group, and have taught him how to be a good person as much as I have. I also have a much older son, from a previous marriage, who is part of my circle of friends. I am proud of both of them.

Competition?
I don't see a minimum age for IDPA or USPSA Junior category. A friend's daughter shot the IDPA Nationals at age 13. With a .45. Her motto was "I'm not going to be in last place." And she wasn't.
IDPA will let him shoot his .22 if he is not ready for a centerfire.
Other venues are welcoming to juniors, too.

He shoots my 9mm just fine. He has shot my 1911 offices model also, But he saI'd it's a bit more than the 9.

I ordered some parts today to "race up" his pistol. If he continues to show interest, I will find him a local match. Who knows maybe I will compete also, I've always wanted to, but never made the time. I made time for his brother to play baseball and football. I can find time for him if he wants to try this.

The oldest was the ball player, he likes shooting, and hunting as well, just not like the youngest. The youngest isn't interested in most sports, but really likes shooting, and hunting. He shot his first deer when he was ten. PA has a "mentoring program".

Talk about quality time with your child, this will do it for sure. There are plenty of good matches in the center of our state, not so many up here in the Northeast though.

If he likes his 22/45, any chance in finding him some rimfire matches?
