My truck got broken into

As bad as things have gotten about thieves breaking into vehicles ?

Are telling us that your are leaving pistols and ammunition around for thieves ?

What kind courses are taught at your school ?

What the hell are you talking about double action? I didn't leave my gun in there. My ammunition and backup are something I regularly bring with me in the house. But thanks to simple human error, I FORGOT. So don'[t act like you don't make mistakes, because everyone does. I just didn't expect the 1% time I did forget my stuff, it gets stolen. I live near U of H for those wondering, and so does my uncle and brother in law, my aunt lives in SW Houston however. I work 60+ hours a week and take two courses on the weekend so sometimes I'm rushed. Please forgive me.

it's not a solution, but it can help. most of us that have firearms go to outdoor stores to purchase supplies(bass pro, cabelas, ect...). the price of game cameras has dropped considerably. buy a game camera, leave it in the house aimed at your driveway. you now have an inexpensive and easily set up security system. when they rob your vehicles, they leave you pictures to go with the prints.

TexasRed; The Safe of Handling and Storage of Firearms is some thing your keep between your ears all the time. With firearms, there is no room for mistakes. There is no excuses.

Sorry for your loss. Property crime seems to be going up now a days. I'm a bit skeptical on the random incident idea. Since there have been so many break ins in one family it sounds as if there is someone there that each of you have run across recently. While it seems bad it could definately be worse, imagine if they had got one of your guns. I hope you have an inventory of them set aside so if one is stolen or turns up missing you can give the police the serial number(s). Hope the police start doing more intensive patrols in your area.

Listen to Black Knight. I'd bet a lot of money that there's some connection other than the thefts between your familiy and the thieves. It'd be long odds that your crowd is getting hit so frequently by sheer chance.

You said that your brother-in-law's stuff was the first to get hit. I'd start checking those around him, your sister or any older children they may have first for any type of connection. One's teenagers' wasted friends are good bets. Or, sad to say, it may be someone in your family. Have any of the younger ones had any issues w/drugs or alcohol? Plummeting grades? Overall surliness lately?

Know a cop? Ask him/her to see if any of their friends or co-workers have criminal records. Any of those friends or co-workers miss a lot of work? Lots of folks with sketchy attendance aren't really sick all the time, just hung over or wasted.

If you and yours keep your eyes open, you may see the girlfriend/wife of one of them walking around in those shoes some day soon.

Hey TexasRed, about where in Houston are you(South, West, East, North)? **Nevermind, I saw your earlier post about your location..**

When I started reading I was thinking to my self, "Man that is really ****ty, I'm glad that doesn't happen much around me.."

But then I saw you live in Houston..as far as I know, it doesn't happen too much near me - but depending on where you live..I may change my way of doing things.

I'm sorry to hear a bunch of low-life pieces of **** won't do an honest days work to acquire the things they want. I seriously doubt the cops will do anything, so I guess we'll just have to hope they get what's coming to them - and soon.

First make a police report, second prepare for the worse. Call transunion and have a fraud alert placed on all your acounts, they will notify the other 2 credit bureaus. It sucks but you don't know the level of sofistication that these street gangs have, most of that stuff will get sold to another party that may specilize in internet theft, so notify everyone remotlly connected to the ID stolen. They now have your name address and bank account, been there, hoprfully nothing will happen, now you know thwt it just doesn't happen to other people. Keep an eye out also as they may come back for the guns. I have the Dogs, alarm and weapons, but they can all be bypassed by a decent pro, and even though these guys may be idiots, they can sell the info to someone who does this better than they do, also you want a police report for any future reprcussions, fraud etc, sorry man, I know how lousy it makes you feel. The camera is a good idea also, you can set up a wireless motion detecter with it's own IP address. Battery backup for the alarm is also necessary otherwise they can kill it easily. And you don't know where those shell casings will end up if they have your prints on them. Think of someone new that's been around since this stuff started happening and you may have your theif, even a friends new girlfriend. And who called you overlly upset, that suprised you

Who cares how much you make ,it does show you have to much stuff lay'n around in your truck. You can carry what you need for you gun or guns on you all the rest should not be there. Gun's clips, ammo, check stubs, cd's back pack, what ever . People better wake up ,if windows are tinted take it off so some dummmy that wants break in can see in and maybe see nothing worthy and not clean out your vehical. Even a person that on SS not leave leave goodies lay'n around. Alarms are great but probably will not stop someone from break'n a window. Just leave the truck with nothing to see. If a regular cab truck ,lay the seat forward. You been hit by someone in your area and they may hit your truck again given time. You were a good hit. If it's a neighbor hood person they might break into your house to find all those guns.....

Sorry to hear about the breakin. As others said, hopefully it's just some kids looking for money- stealing things like shoes and jumper cables smacks of a focus on money. Stealing the radio took some time; they were willing to increase risk to get something that they would have to sell (along with the shoes, etc.) Hopefully they don't have the capacity for identity theft.

I had two wildly contrasting breakins on my cars. In the first, they smashed the window, grabbed my girlfriend's purse she had put under the seat, and left CDs, change in the console, and the radio (which could be removed in a minute or so). These guys had already run up $1500 on the girlfriend's credit cards by the time we returned to the car and called the police. That seemed professional. (I got a lesson- these guys were watching the parking lot and saw my girlfriend duck down which equaled a purse that was completely out of sight. I've never allowed a purse or wallet to be left in the car in the 20 years since.)

The second time, the car was sloppily broken in to. The spoils were a 1/2 bottle of cologne, 5 CDs and the detachable face to my radio from the glove box. You could see where the thief tried to pry the radio out of the dash with their bare hands. The police speculated the stuff they took was probably being swapped for drugs.

Good to raise the alarm about them knowing where you live, and the possibility of guns in the house. For these losers, hopefully it's a deterrent knowing that the next couple hundred bucks in stolen items is a lot riskier. If I had to leave my car outside, I'd consider adding in a driveway monitor/outdoor motion sensor with chime to alert me if someone was in the area of my car (in addition to the car alarm).

Sorry to hear about what happened. I always tell everyone I know never ever leave a backpack or any type of case in your vehicle because it gives the crooks a reason to hit you. They peak through the window and see a backpack they're going in, they peak in and don't see squat they'll go to the next car. I work in IT in San Antonio and in the last two weeks I've had several users getting their laptops stolen from their vehicles, something definitely going on... we usually don't see this much activity until a month or so before Christmas.

While I, too, am sorry for your loss, this situation only points out once again the reason why it's generally a bad idea to leave anything of value at all unattended in any vehicle of any kind. That's especially true if you might be tempted to carry a gun and leave it behind when you get out of the vehicle.
