I was just doing some day dreaming and began wondering if anyone or any company out there ever constructed a shell that contains a slug AND buckshot? I imagine that, when fired, it would amount to a 12 gauge comet: one big projectile trailing a fistfull of BB's.

Thoughts?

No commercial loads that I know of fit this description.

In the flintlock days, a common load was one slightly smaller than bore diameter ball with several "Pistol balls" added. Served well in our Revolution.

In the mass slaughter of Antietam in 1862, the Irish Brigade had outmoded smoothbore muskets loaded with these. As they enfiladed fire into what we know now as Bloody Lane, these "Caused an execution so dire as to be beyond belief.

With the mass improvements in ammo seen in the 20th Century, I see little need for a modern version.

WOW RRTX! Some of those things are CRAZY! They are definitely expensive, but would be fun to "experiment" with. :D

The old Buck and Ball load was reasonably effective from all I've read, but I'd rather stick with one or the other myself.

That one that expands to 2 inches, so it doesn't penetrate, but then "releases" little balls that go inside and "tear tissue apart" sounds interesting. I wonder if they actually work like that.

The one with the little darts look cool too! :D

"The cavity created has the shock effect of 95%! That means only 5% of any living being could survive this kind of hit.23/4†round"

Well written and informative. I must have missed Fackler's discussion of this formula in the latest edition of Wound Ballistics Review.

And let us not forget the Malaya load, developed by the British Army in the mid fifties, for jungle warfare.

00 or 000 buck surrounded by #4 or #2 birdshot.

The buckshot is for the killing/wounding power and the birdshot is for the shocking power.

I have played with these and they are, to say the least, devestating.

It appears that very little has been written about this load.

I have a load that works quite well.

870.

I have experimented with one ball & buck load. It uses Blue Dot to propel a slug & 6 pellets of 00 buck.

Needless to say, the recoil is pretty stiff. Patterns well, though.

These days, being older & wiser, I usually stick to lighter recoiling stuff.

A problem with the old Buck and Ball load is that some of the buckshot would often stick or embed themselves into the back of the larger ball. Minnie balls which are basically very similar to Foster type slugs were more effective.
