I need to install a rear sight on a 586 (no dash) 6" barrel revolver. It had a scope mount screwed into the top strap in holes specifically drilled and tapped for the mount. It has none of the rear sight parts at all. First, is there a place to get a used rear sight to save some money? Second, if I have to buy new, I checked at Brownell's and there are several rear sights, which one do I use. Also, how hard will this be to install and assemble. Thanks.

You can get one from S&W or Numrich's. Either of them can direct you to the proper part; you can get w/o or a solid black blade, and I believe the correct nominal blade height for that application is a .146" blade. You want to be sure to get the assembly complete as putting in the blade is a bit tricky. Make sure they send you both the rear stud/nut and the front mounting screw, they are both very specialized.

Yours should be the "old" type with the square end on the front tang based on the fact you said it was a 586 no dash. Later models were pre-drilled underneath for scopes, but that started with 586/686-4 and later. If you want to save a few dollars, I probably have a used one in good shape if you want, pm or email me. Otherwise, those are you only two reliable sources for a new one.
