I stopped by a local pawn shop on my way to Jensen's to pick up a case of .308. The guy behind the counter tried to sell me some semi auto shotguns, an overpriced AK, a 22 bolt action with no bolt, and then a shorty Mosin caught my eye. The price was $149, so I asked him if he'd take $100, he said he could go down to $125... I told him I wouldn't pay more than $100 and he went off to talk to someone. He came back and said "He said he could do $100 plus tax..." Score!

I've been in that pawn shop every two or three weeks for about a year, and saw a couple things I've liked, but seen alot of overpriced garbage too - but never bought anything. He had an SKS for $180 that I took a look at, but there was rust on the receiver on the right side so I told him I wouldn't take it. He said "I'll sell it to you for 120..." and so I told him I wouldn't buy anything with rust near the breach like that. I've mentioned to him once or twice too that I'm interested in buying an AR, so maybe he's just trying to get me as a customer?

Anyways, after filling out my paperwork (he had to ask me what caliber it was in) and getting in the car to leave, I see him walking out of the front door with several boxes in my hand. I roll down the window and see that they're boxes of ammo. He hands them to me and tells me that I can have them. I thank him and head on to the next gunstore.

Here's where my questions come in....

First of all, Is this an M44 or an M38? It has the round peice near the front where the bayonet lug may have been at one time, but if it were cut off, they did a good job of making it round.

(no, the rifle is not that small and no, my hand is not that big )

What kind of scope mount is this? It doesn't have any markings on it at all.

What kind of ammo is this black stuff? He handed me three boxes of Wolf (one of which actually has 30-30 in it!) and this beige box marked "20 Stuck" with dots over the u and "M 39 Ub" with dots over the U again. I have next to it two rounds of Wolf and two rounds of brown-bag surplus.

Oh yeah - what kind of bent bolt is that?

Thanks!

Colin .... looks like M38 to me - see pic of mine below. The bolt conversion is unusual - very long but daresay nice to use.
"20 Stuck" with dots over the u and "M 39 Ub"
''Stuck'' is German for piece - so a 20 piece/item box. The dots over ''U'' is an umlaught - again German ...Ü or ü . Not ammo I have come across before.

Not sure at all re scope mount etc. Sorry not more help.

See... but here's the clincher... On the left is the barrel to my m44, on the right to the m38 I recently purchased.

The picture of the m38 you posted does not have that band around the barrel near the front...

Yea, I think you have an M44 converted. It looks like a pretty nice job. That scope mount looks a lot like the type used on the M91/30 snipers. It might be an original one modified to take a weaver rail. The bent bolt is surely a custom job.

Look at the top of the reciever, just over the chamber. What does it say there? Is there a year? Any markings such as a star or a triangle, etc?

The markings on the receiver is:
"
02
1953

(moons and crosshammers logo-thing)
BE 8842
"
There is also 02 stamped on the striker, the bolt, the bolt carrier thing, the front site and the stock bracket loop things. Circle B appears on the side of the reciver (as do two others I can't seem to figure out) as well as a circle B on the stock.

Definately an M44. They stopped making the M38s long before then.

With that late date and the other markings, I don't think it's even Russian. A Russian would have a Tula star or an Izhevsk triangle and they stopped making them in the late 40s. It sounds to me like a Hungarian M44.

The Polish, Hungarians, Romanians and Chinese made M44s into the mid 50s. Here's some pics of markings from those countries:

Yep... Hungarian m44. The trigger is about 20 pounds though, compared to the 2 pounds of my other m44... I'll have to look into that...

Anyone have any ideas on the black German ammo?

-Colin

I don't know about the black ammo, but I've got some hungarian that is wrapped in paper like in the picture. Its yellow tip heavy ball (174grain?) Might be the same thing you have.

That mount is very similar to what inter ordnance sells. They're located about 15-20 miles from the house.

Wow, this mount goes for $150 on ebay! That's more than I even paid for the whole rifle!

I think I'll just keep the lightweight ammo around and convince my friends it's "tacital" ammo!! :p  :neener:

I'm going to have to work on that trigger though, it's WAY too heavy... The Huber trigger seems nice, but quite a bit too expensive to put into a $100 surplus gun...

Either way, thanks for the help and info!!

That is the Interordnance mount that they sell for $69.95. The ones on eBay are Russian or Ukrainina made repro mounts, they do not have a rail.

What you got is an M44 with the bayonet ground off and a new mount grafted on. I would bet the bolt handle is cut and welded, probably a one-off, since it does not look either like the originals or like any of repros I've seen. Of course, neither M38 or M44 ever had sniper bolts or scope mounts.

That looks extremely familiar... I wonder how well this thing will shoot. I shot by myself over the weekend, so I don't shoot any new rifles by myself for safety reasons... Oh well, there's always next weekend!
