Thinking lever action Marlin, but I am not sure what caliber. Also, Remington 7600 pump in .308. I see the Remington 7600 gets mixed reviews. I do not hunt so it would be just for use here in AZ on my property. Maybe, go hunting next year with some friends, maybe. I would also use it for home defense if needed but I have a Remington 870 and a Glock 19. I am not interested in AR's or AK's. Ruger Ranch rifle is not an option either. We get a lot of coyotes and some bobcats in my area. If a zombie showed up I would use it on that too :)

Any advice would be highly appreciated. I am in no hurry. My b-day is in a week :)

I have a Marlin 1894C in .357 mag. Very handy little carbine. Everyone should have one.

Can use cheap .38 special for plinking, and .357 from a rifle be loaded up to near-.30-30 levels if you should so desire. Powerful enough to serve as a HD gun too.

I have a .38 special revolver, so I could use ammo for plinking and load up with .357. That would be an option...I will have to research the 1894c. Thanks.

If hunting is a consideration, 357 is not a great choice unless you shot are very, very close. Keep in mind that a 30-30 has more energy at 100 yards than a 44 magnum has at the muzzle.

That's a bit of a stretch. Shooting pistol cartridges out of a carbine doesn't gain you as much as most people think.

Well now I have totally changed my mind. I am going to wait and save up for a Bushmaster in .308 caliber. Until then, I will plink away with my 22lr.

So does a .22-250 but which one would you want to shoot elk with? Energy is meaningless in a discussion about big bore pistol cartridges and their effectiveness on game.

I would consider 400-700fps a HUGE gain.
