Just bought a new 5.5 inch single six today and notice the extractor rod barely gets
the spent brass out of the chamber maybe 1/8 inch. I need longer fingernails or
a screwdriver to get the brass out. Seems like a spring of same
length and less coils would help. Any suggestions ?

Sumthin' ain't right, my 5.5 SS knocks 'em all the way out.

Take the ejector rod housing off and see if something is stuck in there maybe???

I've got a 5.5 and have experienced no problems. I agree, call Ruger, I'm sure that they'll make it right

Folks shouldn't be so quick to send their new gun off to Ruger. Lordy mercy, somethings are easily fixed at home without having to deal with shipping a pistol. Is the ejector button coming to within 1/8" of the basepin? If not, take the ejector housing off and see if there's anything in there besides the ejector rod and spring. If it does, then is the ejector rod tip visible, or at least very close to the opening when at the fully forward position? If not, you may have a faulty, broken or incorrect ejector rod. If it's an inch or more too short, you may have the sheriff's model ejector.

Problem solved ! looks like a combination of a bur where the rod goes through the frame and
a slightly bent rod. Thanks for responses.

Contacting a company's service department doesn't always mean you are sending the product back for repair. Many of them will walk you through fixes to keep the item in your hands. This saves them money and keeps the customer satisfied.
