Every time I have bought new Starline brass it comes with dark tarnish spots on it. The tarnish is just on the surface and usually small spots. Not every piece has it but many do. None of the other brands of brass or ammo I've purchased has such tarnish spots. It surprises me since Starline is known for making such good brass.

I've bought 9mm, 45 acp, 44 mag, .38 spl, and .357 mag over the years. Just bought some 45 acp.

What gives? Tumbling doesn't remove it. Anything work?

Some fine steel wool and a bit of elbow grease will remove tarnish.
It does not bother me. The little brown spot does not affect the usefulness one whit.

Tarnish is not a defect but it can be removed with a soak in mild acid, vinegar is the most commonly used. Soak in vinegar (white doesn't stink) until the dark tarnish spots turn a sorta pinkish color, maybe a few hours. Remove it, flush with clean water, dry completly internally and then tumble normally. It will be impossible to even see where the tarnish was.

Get a steel circular rod (hardware store) just a little larger than your 45 case opng.
Place a 6-8" piece in a drill press.
As it spins taper cut it down with a file so it fits tight inside your 45 case---as case spins --hold steel wool around case----bright shine--no blemish marks.

If you have a lot of cases---soak in vinegar with salt mixed in---see if that will work.

The spots are caused by moisture on the surface of the brass. I don't know if it's caused by their manufacturing process, or the high humidity in Missouri, but it's on almost all the brass I've gotten from them, which is normally .45 Colt and .45-70 brass.

Hope this helps.

Fred

I came across some Starline 45 Colt that I purchased about 9 years ago, It was never used, about half of them looked discolored, a tarnish look, a soak and a wash with Birchwood Carey case cleaner make them look pretty good, then a 30 minute tumble shined them up. I have noticed this with my old starline that has been around for year and never loaded.
