Hello, I'm a newbie to the world of firearms. I don't own a gun, but I have been doing some online studying of firearms in preparation to buy my first gun.
I've fired a few hundred rounds from a .22 rifle when I was a kid.
I've also fired about 50 rounds from a .38 revolver. I shot a few dozen rounds from a semi-automatic Ruger, I believe it was a 9mm.
And I once fired off a round from a .44 magnum. Wow! That was a fun shot! I was about 14 or 15 years old, and the recoil pushed the gun above my head, and I started leaning back, and my uncle was there to catch me before I fell.
I've changed the clip.. erm... magazine, few times, but never loaded a magazine. And I've loaded and unloaded my uncle's .38 revolver many times. I imagine loading a magazine isn’t anymore difficult than loading a Pez Dispenser
I am a huge supporter of a citizen's right to own, carry, and conceal a firearm (so long as he does not do so on private property prohibiting it by the owner), and to use that firearm when he feels his life is being threatened. None of this warning shot crap. None of this “You should’ve aimed for his leg.” or “why did you shoot him more than once, why did you aim for the heart?” If you feel your life is being threatened; shoot to kill. I have a strong distain for limp wrist' vegetarian types who sport a mentality that guns are evil, guns kill people, people shouldn't be allowed to own a firearm over X caliber, or have a magazine with a higher than X capacity, must register a gun, may not carry/conceal a firearm without a nearly impossible to obtain permit. And of course, my favorite liberal media distortion "cop killer" bullets.
What is a cop killer bullet? I've heard of a heat seeking missile, now we got bullets that specifically seek out law enforcement officers. I can't wait to fire one of them just to watch the bullet leave the barrel, come to a dead stop, look around for the nearest cop, and begin whipping and turning through the alleys, into the head of the first cop it sees. That's a neat piece of technology there!
Anyhow, enough politics. I am a firm believer in our right to bare arms. I believe Firearms, Alcohol, and Tobacco ought to be the name of a store; not a government agency.
I came to this forum looking for more input on ballistics, the inner workings of firearms, and the pros and cons of any given type or model of gun.
I hope I am welcome here, and I hope you veterans of firearms can forgive my Newbie lingo such as calling a magazine a "clip", or a cartridge a "bullet".
I’m sure as I become more familiar with guns, my lingo will change into a more technically correct terminology.
And speaking of terminology, I am confused on the definition of “pistol”. Some times I hear pistol referring to a Semi-Auto as opposed to a Revolver. Sometimes the word “pistol” means Revolver as opposed to Semi-Auto. Am I correct in assuming that technically all hand guns are pistols, and thus it is a Semi-Automatic pistol, and Revolving pistol?
