Hello, I'm a newbie to the world of firearms. I don't own a gun, but I have been doing some online studying of firearms in preparation to buy my first gun.

I've fired a few hundred rounds from a .22 rifle when I was a kid.

I've also fired about 50 rounds from a .38 revolver. I shot a few dozen rounds from a semi-automatic Ruger, I believe it was a 9mm.

And I once fired off a round from a .44 magnum. Wow! That was a fun shot! I was about 14 or 15 years old, and the recoil pushed the gun above my head, and I started leaning back, and my uncle was there to catch me before I fell.

I've changed the clip.. erm... magazine, few times, but never loaded a magazine. And I've loaded and unloaded my uncle's .38 revolver many times. I imagine loading a magazine isn’t anymore difficult than loading a Pez Dispenser

I am a huge supporter of a citizen's right to own, carry, and conceal a firearm (so long as he does not do so on private property prohibiting it by the owner), and to use that firearm when he feels his life is being threatened. None of this warning shot crap. None of this “You should’ve aimed for his leg.” or “why did you shoot him more than once, why did you aim for the heart?” If you feel your life is being threatened; shoot to kill. I have a strong distain for limp wrist' vegetarian types who sport a mentality that guns are evil, guns kill people, people shouldn't be allowed to own a firearm over X caliber, or have a magazine with a higher than X capacity, must register a gun, may not carry/conceal a firearm without a nearly impossible to obtain permit. And of course, my favorite liberal media distortion "cop killer" bullets.

What is a cop killer bullet? I've heard of a heat seeking missile, now we got bullets that specifically seek out law enforcement officers. I can't wait to fire one of them just to watch the bullet leave the barrel, come to a dead stop, look around for the nearest cop, and begin whipping and turning through the alleys, into the head of the first cop it sees. That's a neat piece of technology there!

Anyhow, enough politics. I am a firm believer in our right to bare arms. I believe Firearms, Alcohol, and Tobacco ought to be the name of a store; not a government agency.

I came to this forum looking for more input on ballistics, the inner workings of firearms, and the pros and cons of any given type or model of gun.

I hope I am welcome here, and I hope you veterans of firearms can forgive my Newbie lingo such as calling a magazine a "clip", or a cartridge a "bullet".

I’m sure as I become more familiar with guns, my lingo will change into a more technically correct terminology.

And speaking of terminology, I am confused on the definition of “pistol”. Some times I hear pistol referring to a Semi-Auto as opposed to a Revolver. Sometimes the word “pistol” means Revolver as opposed to Semi-Auto. Am I correct in assuming that technically all hand guns are pistols, and thus it is a Semi-Automatic pistol, and Revolving pistol?

when I was a wee lad in hunter safty class, the broad catagory was handguns, of which there were two basic types, revolvers and pistols.

Pistols come in two varieties, full auto machine pistols (and burst fire capable too i suppose) and semi-auto pistols.

now, there does seem to be some breakdown of that definition when you get into single shot flintlock or matchlock handguns, as these seem to be termed pistols as well.

I personally think the term pistol works fine for any handgun EXCEPT for revolvers

If you feel your life is being threatened; shoot to kill.
Welllllll - that is the reality but don't ever say that's what you did if you ever have to. You shoot to eliminate the deadly threat to your life. If the bad guy dies that is just so very unfortunate - you didn't mean to kill him but he/she just wouldn't stop trying to kill you.

OKAY... You're kidding right? RIGHT? If not then you are in serious need of a reality check. Don't believe everything you hear or see in the movies.

How old are you?

Cuz if you're old enough, what are you waiting for!!! Buy a gun!!! And join the millions of happy recreational shooters!

I'm rather new to guns as well. I've been shooting for 4-5 months. Own two handguns for last 4 weeks :) and carry concealed :) Practice every chance I get. FUN FUN FUN!!!

Good to have one more gun enthusiast on our side!

WARM WELCOME TO YOU, and BE SAVE !!!

Welcome White Wolf. Lots of good information here, enjoy. Also, excuse certain people if they act like you should know everything already. None of us really do, we just think so sometimes.

You are off to a good start, Padawan!

You have the right attitude about the RKBA. But like Werewolf said, you don't shoot to kill, you shoot to stop the threat. Someone comes at you with a knife, shoot for center mass. If he falls to the ground after 1 shot, don't shoot 2. Be ready to shoot 2, but only shoot to stop the threat.

Before you buy your first gun, think hard about what you want the gun for and ask a lot of questions.

Welcome to the world of gunnutz.

Welcome to THR. You came to the right place. Can it be suggested that you go to www.nra.org and click on education and training section. There are basic courses in gun safety, pistol, rifle and shotgun class. All the info there should help you locate and refer you to a class in your area. Do not have to be a member of the NRA to join a class, but it helps while joining a organization that helps fight for gun rights. Ranges and gun stores are a good source of info on learning the ropes. There are NRA courses taught by certified instructors at practically every gunshop or firing range. Ask the store manager or knowledgable clerk about these basic courses. Cover the same facets as the ones that are at the web site. Would be more local than trying to find out at the web site. Start collecting as you have the budget to do a library of helpful books on shooting. Gun Digest,Paladin Press, and others put out many good books with certified writers on every shooting subject. Massad Ayoob, Jeff Cooper,Kokalis, Ed Lovette, and Chuck Taylor are good authors to start and stay with. There are many others. Mas writes a yearly book, The Gun Digest of Combat Handgunnery and is an excellent source as well as writer for all the defense aspects. Gun stores usually have a copy. There is also the Police Bookshelf at his LFI website. Welcome to the shooting fraternity. Remember that what you hear at this place can be opinon as well as fact. Verify and clarify all info given. Do not take anything as fact until checked out through other sources. Starting out with a .22 rimfire pistol or handgun will give you the basics to shooting without breaking the budget. Flinching due to expecting the noise and other bad habits can happen early with larger calibers. Rimfires may not be as exciting as centerfires, but there will be time for those later. That is if you haven't started with the larger calibers already. Ruger,Smith&Wesson,Taurus, among others make quality rimfire revolvers and semi-auto pistols. Ruger,Marlin,Remington and others make quality rimfire rifles. Ruger and Marlin make are good starting points in getting an accurate rimfire rifle at a good price. Others will have good suggestions to follow. Heed their advice. Good luck and have fun in the shooting world. Lots to learn and there are no dumb questions. We all are still learning and should never quit. There are no experts. Just authorities on a subject.

Welcome to THR.

Nice bit of parody with the cop-killer bullet piece.

As to
limp wrist' vegetarian types
you might not want to make that sort of comment considering there are 2 vegans in my shooting group that won't kill a critter for any meat or materials, but will rather effectively defend their, and your, life with the 9mms they each ccw.

We're working on getting rid of the class war BS that some members foolishly have been sucked into by the antis. They play right into the enemy's hands when they try to devide instead of unite.

THR is a place where we welcome anyone who supports RKBA regardless of background.

Welcome white_wolf. Is that a reference to your RPG of choice?

Be careful about stereotyping. I know a couple of vegitarians who have no problem shooting semi-auto pistols (they do not limp-wrist). Further, I also know a couple of guys who are more flamboyantly gay than ricky martin, yet support our right to self defense. Remember that not all Democrats are demons. Most importantly here, always remember that not everyone who disagrees with you is stupid, ignorant, or evil. We are a board that has members of many different backrounds and ideologies.
