Nightcrawler's FAL Folly

For a long time, I'd had this idea in my head that I could have just one rifle that could do everything I could possibly want to do with a rifle and I'd be happy with it.

And woe upon me, my friends, for I was a fool!

I've come to realize that I want more than one FAL rifle. I have one, my DSA STG58A, but I think I would be better served by two FAL rifles. If I had a chunk of money to spend and could get them customized as much as I'd want, they'd be as such (post AWB, of course):

The first would be a 21" DSA medium contour rifle. The barrel would be blackened stainless steel. It would have the muzzle break removed and would be fitted with a bayonet lug that accepted M16 bayonets. If this were not possible, it'd have an L1A1 flashhider/bayonet lug combination. The barrel would be shortened to about 20" or so, and would be fluted. The rear sight would be a DSA windage-adjustable Para style. The handguards would be Penguin non-bipod-cut, and the stock would be a Penguin humpback. The grip would be an Ergo G3-style, and I'd have a scope mount for whatever optics I wanted.

The second rifle would be an 18" Paratrooper carbine. It'd have a DSA lightweight alloy Para lower receiver, with a steel folding stock. The chrome lined barrel would be fitted with a Belgian combo-device, and I'd have the tubular bayonet for it. The rear sight would be a DSA windage-knob para, and I'd probably have DSA's para scope mount for optics mounting options. It too would have the Ergo grip.

These two would cover just about everything I currently want out of a rifle. Though, in a perfect world, a 13" FAL OSW would find a home in my collection, too. :D

Just musing, everyone. I've gone more than a month without handling any rifle other than my would-be M16, and it's beginning to get to me. FWIW, I also miss having a car, having my own computer, having my own TV, and having daytime temperatures not break 110 degrees. LOL

And God I hope I spelled "folley" right. "Foley" is when you get sound effects, right?

*sigh* It's been a long couple of weeks. :)

EDIT: ARGH! It's "folly"! I've been out of skool too long I think. LOL

First off, glad to hear you're alive and well.

I've been spending the last few days trying to decide between an M1A Scout and a DSA FAL. It's not an easy decision, particurlarly if I decide to go with the FAL. I can only afford one, so which one do I choose from? There are so many options, it can be darn near impossible to decide. One thing is certain though, I need a .308 MBR to compliment my PSS.

Take care NC.

You have exactly the same thoughts as do I. I have a DSA STG58A. I love it. I also recognize I'd like something more compact.

I purchased a DPMS CAR-15 and...that wasn't it. As such, I will eventually get a shorty FAL. Maybe I can get ORF to build it or find some friendly local falfiles.com friend that will loan me the tools to build it myself.

Kris's Ultimate FAL
• DSA Type I receiver
• No carry handle
• No bipod
• DSA lightweight aluminum lower
• 16" or 18" bbl
• Short gas system
• DSA RIS/RAS - or - Entreprise free float handguard
• Para folder
• DSA Extended selector switch
• Para windage adjustable rear sight, tritium front and rear (unless someone comes up with a workable A2 windage/elevation adjustable rear sight, dual aperatures for the FAL)
• DSA Extreme mount
• DSA M249 SAW pistol grip
• DSA lightweight, short muzzle brake
• ACOG

By the way Nightcrawler. Where are you in Qatar? I am killing a few days in Doha. It would be interesting to talk to another former UP resident.

Pm me if you are interested. I cannot guarantee I will be around. I am waiting for a ship.

I can certainly understand no car, and the heat. Yikes it has been hot out in the persian gulf the last few nights. And the humidity! I would sware it was at least 105f and 99% humidity yesterday morning when we came into port.

It looks like a nasty one out there today. Geeze the haze and heat is bad!

Been two weeks....finally got another day off.

It has been humid as can be lately. We got a two week respite, then on again. UGH.

Anyway, I think I'll keep my STG58A. I don't know if I see the advantage of the medium contour barrel, and I think it'd make the rifle very muzzle-heavy (especially with an alloy lower). We'll see, though. I've got ten more months to decide.

You know you really want the Congo Para model, and by the time you get back you should be able to purchase one with a folding stock that really folds.:) Stay in the shade!

Trust me when I say this.

"What shade in Qatar?"

The best I could tell, outside Doha city there is no shade to speak of till you get to Ras Laffan.

I've come to realize that I want more than one FAL rifle
me too

I already have a imbel carbine model from ORF..I asked for the internet special of 475 and got the last one he had in his store at that time.I would recommend ORF to anyone wanting a good build and their price was reasonable too.

I'd like an isreali HB version too..maybe after the AW ban goes away and I win some lottery money:D
