I finally got a good nipple wrench and removed the nipples from my as yet unfired Uberti 1860 Army. Two questions. How much pressure to tighten them? I put TC Anti-seize lube on them and put them back in just finger tight. Do they need some wrench tightening? Also, do you remove them every time you clean the gun after firing? I'll be using Pyrodex powder.

Just a slight tightening is all they need. No need to really torque them down. Definitely remove them and clean the threads each time after firing, especially when using Pyrodex.

A drop of oil on the threads when you put them back assures you they won't get stuck

Oil tends to go away as far as a permanent lube if the gun is stored for a long time. I visited my father just before he died 5 years ago; he had a Spanish copy Baby Browning .25 in a dresser drawer for years and neither he nor I could not rack the slide by hand. I asked if the pistol had a round chambered and the answer was an emphatic "NO"!". We took it outside and, on a picnic table covered with a thick towel, magazine removed, and no one else around, slammed the muzzle down perpendicularly. It worked and the pistol functioned flawlessly after a new oiling.

I worked in the HVAC/Refer/Mechanical field for nearly 40 years and the only thing that ever worked was this (brand was no big deal) and it must be a copper based product:

It will never fail, even when we used it on gas/oil fired boiler or high-pressure steam parts.

YMMV.

I used to go an eighth- to quarter-turn (using a wrench) past true finger tight with a dry thread. Now use 1/4 turn with T/C breach-plug grease. Easier to remove after firing.

Put anti-seize lube of some type on the threads and you won't have to wear the nipples out removing them every time. I remove mine "when ever I think it is time" but I shoot often and clean with black powder solvent not, in the dish washer or under water.

On a related thought...

A vendor at the March Rendezvous/Antique Gunshow in Monroe WA had this neat tool for cleaning revolver nipples. He cut a 1" wide strip off a 3/8ths or 1/4" thick plastic (HPDE) cutting board, and drilled/tapped six holes for the nipples at one end. He used the other half as a handle. Easier to wire brush the nipples clean that way. For Italian guns, 6mm-0.75 taps are available on Ebay.

Do they need some wrench tightening?

I always tighten mine down with a wrench until they're snug. After every shooting I always remove the nipples and clean them and the threads on the nipple and in the threads in the chambers.

I've always wrenched mine down tight, always will.
