non-youth sized, inexpensive .410/28?

My cousin has been jonesing for a .410 for a couple years, ever since her brother sold the one he had. I'd like to get her one as a thank you gift for helping us out when our baby was born, but I'm having a hard time finding the right one.

Everything I find is tiny. Stocks 3" shorter than 12 or 20 ga. Short barrel. Just tiny. My cousin is 5'11" and well over 200 pounds. There is no way she comfortably shoot a youth-sized gun.

I've heard of high-ish end skeet guns in 28/.410, but here I'm looking for inexpensive. Like under $200 new or used (preferably used, but just so I can get more gun for the money). .410 or 28 is ok. Single shot is fine, and likely all I'll get for the price, although a pump would be great too. Her primary gun in a 12 gauge Wingmaster, so no problems with a pump

Any suggestions?

Well, it's only got a 19" barrel, but the Saiga .410 is a good gun. Right now, R&R Arms is listing them for $218 + $19 S/H. I don't know where you'll find a new gun for less than that.

Mossberg used to make a "standard" Model 500 in .410.... the M500E.

If you can find one, it shouldn't be too expenseive, your best bet would probably be to hit the gun shops and check out the "used gun" sections. For some reason .410's don't get any love....and their used prices reflect it.

Around here Walmart carries that Mossberg .410 pump. It is generally less than $200 if I remember correctly.

Remington makes, an adult size 870 Express in .410. Pretty sure they make a 28 as well.

You can send a used NEF frame in and get the 26" 28ga. barrel fitted to it for around $42 plus shipping. At that point you might as well spend the extra few bucks and start with a new gun in whatever other gauge you might want, or a rifle caliber you could use.

I'm still waiting for mine to come back though, expect to wait a good month or more...

I agree the used market is generally the way to go on shotguns, and I've seen some deals. As a slight upgrade to a single-shot, I've seen a few bolt actions and were around $100. I don't have performance info for a b/a shotgun, but they used to be fairly common, and they almost give them away now if you can find one.

Keep hitting the shops and keep your eyes open. If you're not in a hurry, deals will eventually come to you. Otherwise, get on gunbroker and see what comes up under .410.

Mossberg still makes the adult-sized .410 called the 500E. I bought one new at Gander Mountain last year for $199. The only drawback is that it's a fixed full choke. I might get mine opened up a little bit.

Remington no longer makes the 870 Express in .410, but you could probably find one used. The 870 Wingmaster LW (lightweight) in .410 and 28-gauge are nice guns with interchangeable chokes, but you can expect to pay at least 3 times as much as you would for the Mossberg.

For shooting birdshot, the full choke is preferable IMHO. It helps make up for the reduced payload.

I understand the theory of tighter chokes for smaller shotloads, but I'd like to try shooting skeet with the gun, and it's too tight for that. I wish they made a Poly-Choke in .410.

BTW, I was in Gander today and the 500E is up to $249. Still not bad for a brand-new shotgun.

I was in the gun store yesterday and they had a Baikal O/U .410 that felt really good (I'm 6'). I think it was listed at $329 and it seemed to have better checkering than most Baikals and of course seemed well made. Just a thought.
