Gun Control Rally Fails to Draw Large Crowd

All Things Considered audio

May 9, 2004

A crowd in the hundreds gathers for the Million Moms March on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. The turnout was far smaller than the tens of thousands who showed up for the first Million Moms March, four years ago. Organizers downplayed the small size of the crowd -- but they acknowledged these are tough times for gun control. NPR's Libby Lewis reports.

It was an even smaller crowd than that since there were several hundred pro-gunnies there as well doing their utmost to counter-demonstrate.

Our local NBC affiliate said that "thousands" gathered, but from looking at their closeups of small groups I told my wife it seemed pretty obvious that they'd have been lucky to have 500.

It's nice to be right every once in awhile, and it couldn't have happened to a more deserving organization.

VPC and Brady Campaign at odds? Heaven forbid!:D

Remember to kick them while they are down folks. Keep those cards and letters going out and remember to vote!

If that's the Libby Lewis story you're referring to, I noticed one glaring error and a couple of misleading items.

Glaring error: that the AWB bans the "sale" of AK-47's and Uzi's, and that come September they'll be legal for sale again. (The truth being that you can buy and sell them NOW, but can't manufacture or import any more for civilian use, and mere possession of a post-ban "assault weapon" is a felony.

Misleading item #1: Lots of mention of "AK-47's" and "Uzi's" and "19 banned guns," but no mention of the true scope of the law--all firearms >10 rounds and all detachable-magazine selfloaders with 2 or more of the listed features.

Misleading item #2: that this issue "just isn't important this election year." It may not be terribly important to the anti's, but it sure as heck is important to me.

Wrote a letter to NPR and got an answer back that the AWB "does in fact ban the sale" of Uzi/AK lookalikes.:banghead: I replied back with the actual text of the law, but haven't gotten a second reply yet.
