Store Owner Shoots Back

(Buffalo, NY, September 15, 2003) - - An East side store owner shot
back when a man with a gun attempted to rob his corner store. It
happened at Northland and Schuele around Noon Monday. News 4's Erika
Brason has the latest.

"I heard three shots and watched a lot of people with children running
for cover."

It was around Noon time when a gunman walked into a corner store at
Northland and Schuele and demanded cash.

Buffalo Police Lt. Karen Healy said, "The clerk at that time did hand
over money and the perpetrator fired a shot at the clerk...missing him."

Within moments, the tables turned, and the store owner came out with a
gun and shot the suspect dead.

Police at this point believe the gunman was acting alone.

Schuele Block Club President Charles Murray was nearby during the
commotion, and says several children were in the area waiting for a
school bus.

He describes the store owner as a respected member of the community.
Murray says this incident comes at a time when things are improving in
the neighborhood, and that this corner store was an unfortunate target -
luckily the owner was prepared, "There's nothing bad I can say about
those people except this happened in their store."
