Officer Melvin Collins
Brunswick Police Department, GA
End of Watch: Friday, April 11, 2003

Age: 31
Tour of Duty:1 day

Officer Collins was shot and killed when he intervened in a robbery while working an off-duty job at a grocery store. Two men came into the store and attempted to rob it. When one of the suspects fired two shots past a female clerk's head, Officer Collins identified himself as a police officer and exchanged shots with the two suspects.

Although mortally wounded, Officer Collins struck one of the suspects in the hand and was able to subdue him with the help of two off-duty U.S. Marshals who were also in the store. The second suspect fled into a nearby marsh where he was apprehended the following day.

Officer Collins had just graduated from the academy and was to have his ceremonial swearing-in on the following Monday, three days after he was killed. He is survived by his wife and two children.

This article is months old.

What's the point of posting it now?

question for LEOs, if you heard shots and saw who was doing the shooting and they were pointing a gun at a person, would you have to identify yourself or tell them to stop or whatever before you shot em or could you just let loose on em?

shot in the hand, says something for those fresh academy shootin skills, and it ain't good. maybe a different outcome if skills were better.

what were the marshalls doin? they just sittin around and hoping the shooters go away?

Actually it’s pretty common. Most people tend to focus on the weapon. You'd be surprised at how adept your body is at shooting what you're looking at.

What I want to know is what is the point of these threads. They are only peripherally gun related. Is there some issue you are trying to expose to us TheeBadOne?

I don't see how they are even gun related.
