I recently posted a question on a forum called the ak files. It was ak related, so I figured it was the right place. I received 12 replies of nonsense. Mostly people telling me how dumb I was. This post isn't a rant on a bad experience. It's a thank you to all on THR. I have posted 4 or 5 times on this site and every time the responses are helpful and relevant. So to all the " newbies" this is a great site for information.

There is only one or two brand specific forums I will visit for the same reason you described. THR is by far the best source of information about guns on the web, with the most engaging group of people.

I'm a member of several brand specific forms but seldom visit them. I quickly tired of 1.) talking about one single manufacturer ad infinitum and 2.) the constant barrage of only this or that maker being worthy of your money.

As with many items, not just guns, variety is the spice of life. For me anyway ... 'cept for wives.

I checked out that AK forum once. Once.

I've tried quite a few different forums over the years. THR and Rim Fire Central are the only ones I consistently go back to (and even RFC not very much). It's easy to tire of all the internet geniuses. They don't last long here.

there is nothing wrong with a practical joke but I'm afraid the word "practical" goes in one ear and out the other for some people.

I stumbled across THR years ago and really like the info I find here. Lots of "real" experts and people who've actually walked the walk, and who don't mind sharing their knowledge and experience. I don't post much, but I (almost) always end up smarter when I visit, and get genuine, thoughtful answers when I need them. Best gun-related site anywhere, as far as I'm concerned.

I agree, I feel blessed to have found THR at the beginning of my journey in shooting -- people here are knowledgable and serious. I visited a few other gun fora but did not feel comfortable with the atmosphere and even as a newbie could see that many folks elsewhere are experts only in their own minds.

What's funny is that... for the exact reason you describe...we have a set of rules which are enforced. We bring in lots of apples, some good some bad, some mediocre. Those rules run the bad apples off pretty quickly, and if the rules don't the mods do by banning them. We keep the good and mediocre.

And as for brand or type specific sites it truly is boring. I'm a member on a couple but it's been a long time since I visited. Some sites just seem to be full of our rubbish who like to belittle people and make a mockery of the whole idea of sharing info.

There is a high noise-to-signal ratio at akfiles.com. A lot of it comes from AK traditionalists who think every rifle must have wood furniture, and that any deviation from the original 1940s design is an abomination.

"AK FUDDs", if you will.

But there are also a lot of very knowledgeable folks there, and it still is a very good resource. You just have to weed out the noise.

There are also a lot of very knowledgeable people here, too, and the "noise" is weeded out for you. I'd just as soon not have to bother when it's ready-made right here. Plenty of AK guys on THR.

Some people have a pathological need to wound near the surface.
They tend to use Internet aninimity and uninhibitions to satisfy that need

That's why I like THR.
No political forums, no religious (bashing) forums.
Just good people who like to shoot
