Will be picking up my first .22 rifle wednesday and I need suggestions on optics. It's the HK MP5 A5. Anyone have this rifle and what have you put on it.

I think I've figured it out that you have to buy a claw scope mount before putting any optic on. I'm not sure what optic to put on it, probably a red dot.
Can't believe no one owns any of these nice little .22lr rifles.

Yes you will need the claw mount in order to mount any sort of optic on it. I would go with a red dot as well but for now I still just use iron sights.

I have one and I really like it!

I've owned a couple GSG-5's in the past (pistol, rifle) but they seemed to be a bit finicky on ammo and I saw too many come back with problems to the gun shop I work at. The Umarex HK MP5-22 has worked flawlessly for my since day 1 and I've put several tousand rounds through it so far without issue and doesn't seem picky on ammo! I also don't like the complexity of the internals of the GSG-5, the HK MP5-22 is more like the original and I think the fit and finish is better also.

Here's mine....

Thanks for reply NWilliams. Your A5 model is exactly what I'm picking up tomorrow. Can you still purchase the HK's in 9 mm version. What is the best ammo for the A5.

I don't use any optics for my 9mm, and here's why:

The STANAG style claw mounts will place the optic way too high, giving you a chin weld instead of a cheek weld. The low profile mounts such as the B&T or the MFI are better solutions, but depending on the optic you use, you will either have a reticle resting on the front sight ring or (in the best case scenario) you get an absolute co-witness.

If you wind up with the reticle right on the sight ring, it may drive you crazy and lead you to modify/cut the front sight (this was a common mod many moons ago and some still do it today). If you wind up with an absolute co-witness, you've got a reticle cluttering up what is, in my opinion, some of the best iron sights available on a shoulder fired weapon. It does give you better low-light performance, but probably not a realistic benefit as it pertains to a .22LR.

HK Diopters are great. Don't block 'em, use 'em!

You can still find HK-94's but they are very expensive ($3,000+ depending on condition) and my experience with US made versions of the HK-94 has convinced me to stay away from them.

Mine is actually a Turkish made HK-94 and and it's as close as you can get to owning a genuine HK-94 for about half the price. They were imported by ATI for a short while but are no longer being imported and thus they are beginning to climb in value just like the original HK ones have done.

As for ammo for the MP5-22 I've had good luck with every ammo brand I've tried, even Rem Golden Bullets which my GSG-5's absolutely hated! I mostly shoot CCI AR Tactical Rimfire Ammunition through it.

I've had a couple US made HK style SW-5's that never caused me any grief but sold them when I bought my Coharie Arms CA-89 ... it ran perfectly and was only $900 ... after a couple thousand rounds I SBR'd it and yesterday, after a 7 month wait I brought home a full auto sear for it.

Special Weapons, Bobcat and Coharie get kind of a bad rap because of their owner, but I've personally owned 11 different products from the combined companies and only had trouble with one ... the SW32 which was a HK93 size carbine that shot the 7.62x39 ... it just wouldn't feed reliably from anything but a 5-round AK mag. Rather than make it right, the owner decided to charge $200 for a "reliability upgrade" ... I was out as I just didn't have any confidence in the gun and it kicked worse than the 308 so I thought it might have other issues down the road.

here's my little gem, along with a couple Genuine HK's ...

Good to hear that you are having good luck with your US made HK-94 clones!

I had a very early SW-5 that was a jam-o-matic and I got rid of it. I then made the worst gun buying mistake of my entire life and bought a Vulcan V-94 and it was nothing but problems from day 1 and I ended up selling it for parts for a couple hundred bucks.

HK MP5-22SD here. It runs like a sewing machine on any 22LR ammo you feed it. I really enjoy shooing mine. I do have scope mounts for it but generally just run open irons. If the magazines were $18/ea like the M&P15-22 instead of $39/ea, it would really be a contender. Especially since the bolt holds open on last round fired! Try that with your MP-5, unless it just happens to be a MP-5/10...

I picked up my MP5 A5 today and got two extra mags at $32.00 a piece, and then went and bought some CCI 40gr. Federal 36 gr.HP, and Winchester 36 gr. HP. The MP5 fits neatly in a Wilson tennis bag for a discrete carry bag. Will be taking to indoor range tomorrow to shoot it and have some fun.
