Out of battery detonation

I had an out of battery detonation last month. I was firing 7.61 NATO reloads in my M1A. When it went off there was a distinctively lower toned bang, lots of blue smoke, stiff wind on my hand and face, and the bottom of the mag flew off. My determination is that I let an improperly seated primer through and the bolt face set it off. Here are a couple of photos. It is fairly easy to pick out the good brass from the destroyed brass.

Glad you werent injured

that might not be the best way to form strait wall cases from a .308....just saying. Again, glad you werent hurt, hows the rifle?

No obvious damage to the rifle. Kept shooting that day and it was still on. This saturday is an 'as-issued' match at our club and I will be trying out a new hooded rear sight.

Could have been a high primer or a case that wasn't resized just right and was sticking out a little. Either way good thing the brass held and didn't burst.

With the M1's and M1As, I check all my sized and trimmed brass in a case gauge, and then mic the primers with a primer gauge. That should eliminate most of your ammo related worries with these rifles.
