Pamper myself

I do have an outdoor range behind my house. The wind here was brutal today and windy tomorrow it is supposed to be. A local indoor range 20 minutes away with one of those fancy automated target returns.

I'm going there tomorrow.

Sounds like a good idea!

Years ago when supposedly I was smarter (a few more brain cells to work with back then), and a tad bit more daring, me and a buddy of mine went shooting at an outdoor range in the middle of winter. Temp was below freezing and the wind out of the northwest made it feel like it was -20*!

For some odd reason we were the only two people (i.e. idiots), out there as we had the whole range to ourselves. Only made one trip out to set targets at 100 yards as the snow was like knee deep. Brought along our ARs and surprisingly enough had no problems with them despite the inclement weather. Went through 6 or 7 preloaded 20 rounders before I couldn't feel my finger tips anymore. A sure sign we had been there long enough and we packed it in and headed home.

Still it was a fun day at the range (in an odd but memorable way), and I'm relatively sure that I won't be spending any more time during the winter at an outdoor range!

Been there. A few years ago I joined a club an hour outside of Chicago along with a neighbor. We were so excited about being able to shoot that we went on a day with single digit temperatures and the snow blowing sideways. Like you we were the only two idiots there. Unlike you we weren't smart enough to leave quickly and shot for a while. We fortunately avoided frostbite.

At the range we went to the owner lived there and he didn't even want to go out and check on things! That should have been a sign that we might be risking life and limb to do some shooting but we went anyways! He just had us leave our driver licenses by the back porch door and pick them up and pay on our way out!

What a couple of knotheads we were!

Usually when the weather hits the extremes I find myself "out back" (home range also) testing and chronographing loads to get my low temp extremes captured. About the only thing I won't do in the serious wind is zero a rifle.

The short commute (100-300 yds) makes the shorter sessions worthwhile, coveralls, pac boots, and a X-tra large knit cap that fits over my ear pro make it bearable.

I have the range to myself or with who ever comes with me, most of the time.

A private membership range, but most don't come out when it gets over 85° or under 60° or the wind is blowing over 10 mph or it is cloudy

We qualify in rain, shine, snow, wind, 120 degree heat… you name it. Our SO has to get around 2,500 people through an 8 hour day three times a year (it used to be four), when you add in maintenance days, other training uses hogging the ranges, academy use and missed training make-ups, they don’t take much time off for weather.

It doesn’t get anywhere near as cold for us as you guys see In the Midwest, but there are challenges for the shooters. I remember one night session in January where the rain-sleet was blowing sideways at about 60 mph. We had to use rolls of clear Saran Wrap stuff to hold the paper targets on the backers or they got soggy and blew away.

Stay safe.

It was a good day. Took my 45acp Colt Wiley Clapp Government and my 9mm Dan Wesson Vigil Commander. I am cleaning them now.

The Colt out shot the Dan Wesson today. This Colt always does. I'm going to try to help the Dan Wesson catch up to the Colt because I prefer it for carry.

Getting out to the range in what might be deer hunting weather is not the worst idea ever. Make sure the firearms and your cold/wet weather gear perform up to snuff.

That ones a 65. :)

Yea, the 19's are getting salty. That one only cost me $450 a couple of years ago. Bought another this past year, and it cost me almost a grand. All of them seem to like the snow too. :)

Back about 1970, I cashiered for the Fox Valley Gun Club I belonged to. Any way on one of the Sundays in midwinter, it was 20 degrees below zero and the wind was just howling. The wind chill was 60 below zero. I called the guy in charge and asked if we would open the club. He said yes, so I drove 30 miles to the club. I think we had less 10 idiots (shooters) come and shoot. We shot 3 man squads and they came in with frostbite and low scores. DUMB!!! I was smart enough to stay inside.

How are you going to learn wind doping at an indoor range?
