Hoping there are folks from Illinois here.

In the coming weeks I am going to have to drive from MI to and thru IL a couple times. The first trip will be thru Chicago. Since my MI CPL is not honored in IL I will have to go from carrying to transporting it. I will be driving a pickup truck so I will have no trunk to lock it in. What would be the legal method of transporting a sidearm while in IL?

Thanks

I was in an SUV when I went through IL and Chicago last Summer.

I may have done overkill, but I broke down the gun - took slide off, mag out and locked it in an under-seat safe (Nanovault 200) the minute I hit the IL border. I didn't really need to do that until I got to Chicagoland.

There's some strange rules in Chicago - leaving it in the car in the parking lot of the hotel is OK...having it in your hotel room is OK...but sort of a hazy gray area of carrying it from your car to your room.

See this website: http://www.handgunlaw.us/ click on the state of IL About 2/3 of the way down, you will see: Title 18 > Part 1 > Chapter 44 >

Actually, if you have a valid CCL from another state you can carry *in your vehicle* only while you're in our wonderful state. If you get out, I would recommend unloading and placing it in a locked container in the vehicle, do not exit the vehicle wearing the weapon or with it being loaded in a container.

The Illinois Carry website has more details.

... which is why I directed the OP to the IllinoisCarry website, where the applicable state law is linked. Facts, not opinions.

You can stow the unloaded weapon behind the seat in an inaccessible container.
I would NOT recommend stowing loaded magazines alongside the weapon even though it is legal here, stow them in another piece of luggage.

A Hotel/Motel room is considered your domicile, you can have a loaded weapon in your room, do NOT carry the weapon on your person in the hallways or public areas.

Yup, sure can. If you are licensed in your state you can have it in your car, loaded, in Illinois.

If you leave the car, and the gun remains (in the car), the vehicle must be locked or the gun must be locked in a container inside the car (locking glove box suffices, for example)
