I used to have a 2-1/4" SP101 in .357 awhile ago, sold it for a stupid relationship I was in and regretted it ever since. This time I was going to make it just a tad different though by adding some Badger grips and a Gemini gold bead sight I bought off of a Ruger forum member.

I'll be shooting it this coming week but I'm not sure if its worth a range report since its not something new or uncommon.

You've made a few simple changes and ended up with a very nice looking functional carry piece...
Good work!!

Thanks! My plan for the SP101 is for it to replace my 638. It would be used with .38 (+P) loads for ankle carry, in a 5.11 shirt carry when on a bicycle, or loaded with .357 when hiking or camping to go along with my Redhawk in 45LC.

If anyone was wondering about my thoughts on the grips..

The grips defiantly fit the hand more so than the stock rubber w/plastic inserts and the angle can best be described as if one were to thrust a sword. From reports I've seen of the Badger grips, the recoil is either tamer, the same or uncomfortable due to the grips not fitting someone hand dimensions. The dimensions are perfectly fine for me so I'll see soon how the recoil is. Shooting full power .357 loads through my original SP101 wasn't bad at all.

Congratulations, and welcome back to the world of the SP101, perhaps the best compact urban-carry handgun in the world, in my biased opinion. Thanks for the pic of the gold bead front sight; it is a reminder that I want to try one of those.

This is my first gold bead sight and I must say that I like it quite a bit. It shines perfectly in almost all light conditions except completely dark of course.

NICE!

But, you should send it to Gemini and get the carry package (really helps the trigger) and the slabside option. Here's my 3" DAO.

I got mine used (for a really great price - a steal). It was not ported and I am glad. I would not have had it ported if I had spec'ed it out.

I had a SP-101 2.25" and sold it to fund my AR. I am getting the itch and want another one but I am getting a 3" this time around.

Nice guns guys.

Nakano,
Did you purchase the front sight, or was it on there when you bought it? I got an 3" SP 101 awhile back, the front sight seems a little high, just curious. Also price if you bought the sight.

I bought the sight from a member on the Ruger forums that had it on their SP101. I had the grips, sight and holster waiting when the SP101 was brought home and everything went on right away.

I had a SP101 before so I already know how it shoots in a stock configuration. The sight may seem much higher but it really isn't. The gold bead is the exact same height as the top of the stock sight.

AEA, your SP101 looks pretty darn nice. :)

I pretty much like mine the way it is, hammer spur and all. The trigger is fine and will only get better with use. I work on all of my own guns so if I feel like a polish job or spring replacement is needed, I'll get to it. Right now its like my original SP101 re-born. ;)

Badger Grips Question

Got a question for you guys that have Badger grips on your SP101. I've tried Ruger factory, Hogue rubber, Hogue wood, Eagle, Uncle Mikes rubber, and Badger on my SP101. For me, the best for my hand are the factory ones or the Hogue rubber.

Regarding the Badger ones...they seem to have a unique grip angle and point the gun way high for me unless I bend my wrist and hand downward to an uncomfortable position.

The OP said it here:
...the angle can best be described as if one were to thrust a sword.

That is not the way any of my other handguns feel in my hand. Do you guys really like the Badgers? I find them most uncomfortable...for me that is.

I've settled...my SP101 with a Night Sight.

Exactly the same for me. Same story with the Eagle Secret Service grip. When doing any sort of quick or instinctive type shooting I was easily 6" at 7 yards.

I've ended up with the Hogue monogrip on my 3" and my new .22 SP101.

Very nice looking. I am in need of another one as the one I purchased a few months ago has been snagged by my wife. She shoots it better than anything I have and she wasn't interested in semi's. It carries well and hides pretty decently.
