I have a Rem 700 laminate stock where the barrel does not sit center in the barrel channel. The barrels is free floating with no pressure points but the gap on one side is twice the width of the other side. It's pretty noticable to because the barrel chanel almost looks like it was cut for the next barrel size up, so the gap is noticable. I think it's the screw locations because when you drop barrel and receiver into the stock it sits almost center. By the time you get them tightened up the barrel is off center. Would pillar and/or glass bedding the action correct this?

Sure. You could hog out the existing holes and 'move' them by setting pillars into accraglass or another bedding compound BUT you need to go slow, fit all inletted parts up to see how any moving of the barreled action in the stock effects the location of the trigger, the mag floorplate, the recoil lug, and the rear of the action in how they all fit into the existing cuts.

Move one thing - effect all other things, and it'd be pretty easy to find that you've made a real mess of the fit to the stock.

Might be easier to just hog out the channel until it's even on both sides?

How does the rifle shoot?

I hear you on how fast you can screw up a stock and I plan on taking it too a pro. Haven't shot the gun yet, it's new (to be) and I just got the scope on it last night.

One thing worth mentioning: I took the whole thing apart last night and let the barrel just sit in the stock to check whole alighnment, Not Perfect, but close enough. What I did notice is that when I push the beaver-tail end of the receiver in place (where the back screw hole is) the barrel floats at twists. It appears like the biggest problem may be the rear channel they cut, not the barrel. If a stocksmith could shave a little out of that area it should sit straighten out a bit. Sincse he's going to be doing that work the original question reamins: pillar/and or glass bedding?
