I am looking to purchase a pistol grip buttstock for my 870. Can anyone recommend one of good quality? I am looking for a black synthetic stock that will look factory. I don't want anything cheap and cheesy. I like the SpeedFeed III Tactical one, but have read a lot of complaints about the magazine tube in the stock not holding shells very well, and it only holds 2 extra (from what I read). I saw an 870 at a gun show this weekend with a Remington factory pistol grip buttstock that held 4 extra shells but was told they only make it in camo.

I'd suggest the Speedfeed IV or the tactical version- 1" shorter IIRC. This model does not have the shell holders in the stock. If I were to add extra shells, I'd also use a side saddle mounted on the receiver.

have you ever shot one? I'd recommend that first. I think they feel awful. I had a chance to shoot one today. Very unnatural and clunky imo. it was a speedfeed. well made, just a deisgn not suited to a pump imo. better on a semi

Pistol grips ?

The FBI and other law enforcement reccommends shoulder stocks on shotguns, and so does the Military. And for good reason , they are not easy to shoot well. Try one yourself, and you will probably come to the same conclusion I did many years ago, that the shotgun is a shoulder-fired weapon for best results.

Read THIS

On this shotgun sight in the Shotgun library there is an article written by Dave McCracken, a very knowledgeable shotgunner about this topic. It would be wise for you to read it first. Click on it at the top of the page listed for today and it is the first one.

This discussion is about full stocks with pistol grips (like in the thread that I linked) - not PGO shotguns.

Let's not derail this one with PGO silliness, please.

I have a speedfeed III on my mossberg 500. I can notice no difference between it and the original stock. I find the pistol grip buttstock a comfortable fit for me. Also I have not had any problems with the two buttstock rounds falling out at anytime. I would still recommend the sidesaddle on the receiver as well, because five is better than two.

I would Try Before You Buy. I have found pistol grips a little awkward and unnatural for me. They look cool and "tacticool", but if you can't shoot well with them....

I'd recommend the 13" LOP Speedfeed as well, and I don't like the shell holding tube models {these hold 4 rounds BTW} because the shells are often too hard to get at quickly, especially the first one up in each tube. Totally defeats the purpose.

Yes, I am talking about shoulder stock/pistol grip combo. I have shot them and like the way they feel. I will read through the information provided, thanks everyone.

I have a Choate stock on one of my 870s but I think one of these days I'll wind up swapping it out for a conventional Speedfeed stock. While it works alright, I also found that it's a little more clunky to work with when compared to the standard design stocks when it comes to a pump gun.

I have a fixed ATI pistol grip stock on my Maverick 88 and really like the feel of it. Plus it was only $30 on gunbroker.

SFB- I stand corrected and Apologize

In my old age I must remember to read more carefully. You are correct and there are advantages to having a pistol grip attached to a buttstock. One is it allows you to be able to hold and have good control of the gun with ONE HAND, as when opening a door with the other, and quickly be at the READY again. Many law enforcement like them for that reason.
