Pistols are little!

Hi, ev'rybody!

Bereft of a good day's shooting at Elm Fork shooting park here in Irving, TX (there was some kind of big shottie competition going on, so there was no trap at all that day), and without WalMart's cooperation on the ammo front (for some reason, there were no valuepacks of 12 gauge there at all) my dad and I rolled on down to the local BassPro store to pick up some shells and to ogle some pistols. We looked at a Springfield Mil-Spec 1911 and, when I hefted it up into my tiny little schoolgirl paws, it hit me..

Pistols are just itty bitty little things! Even with my tiny hands, my fingers wrapped all the way around the grip, the whole deal was only a little longer than my hand from wrist to middle-finger-tip. I don't know what I was expecting. I was fully aware that a full-size 1911 has, what, a 5" barrel? But still, from all the magazine articles I've read, from all the pictures I've seen, I'd always felt that pistols were... well, bigger!

my first thought the first time I was permitted to hold a Desert Eagle was "wow are these small or what". The second was "I knew Hollywood is less than truthfull about gun size, but this is insane".

Yeah, but they get much, much larger and much, much, much heavier when carried hour after hour. By the time you've lugged that eensie-weensie itsy-bitsy model of 1911 around all day long, it's going to feel about the same size as the average shotgun.

Big guns just cause arm fatigue, can't shoot those big desert eagles all day unless you're schwarzenegger in his new megablockbuster.

Wow, jeez, didn't mean to acid-rain on your parade or anything. I was just commenting that, compared to my perceptions of the thing from all the pictures and movies and reviews and all that crap I'd ever seen, the pistol was small. Maybe you've never had any kind of misconception about the dimensions of something, or anything, but I have, and the 1911 just happened to be smaller than I'd imagined.

Jeez, and even what I said was a good thing, I have tiny little schoolgirl paws, and I can wrap them around the 1911's grip easily.

When I first got around firearms I got the same impression. Handguns seemed so... small. Well, not small but not what I expected. On the other hand everything about, say, a Yugo Mauser was far "fatter" than I thought it would be. You get used to it quickly but we get this idea that handguns are very large. I suppose it could have something to do with the power we invest in these objects. The movies, comics, and books make us think that handguns are death rays. And we decide such power needs a big vessel.

I remember the first time I held a 1911. After reading about them in gun mags and seeing pictures I expected them to be these huge and heavy things. I was quite struck by how small they are in real life. Strangely enough big revolvers are every bit as large and heavy as they appear.

Sounds like you've picked out your first handgun. Well Done!

Be sure to get a .22 pistol too, as soon as you can -- lots of fun, good practice and cheaper to feed.

Actors are SMALL.

For various stupid reasons, I've met several actors in person. With the exception of Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca in Star Wars) I have always been struck by how much smaller they are in person than they appear on screen.

I suspect that many people get their ideas about guns from movies & tv but never realize that actors tend to be small, on the average.

Try picking up Daddy's 1911 when you're 8 or 9 years old. I was a big kid but when Dad handed me the 1911 for the first time it sure seemed like a cannon compared to the High Standard 22 that he normally let me shoot at that age. Now I'm 47 and a big dude with big hands and pistols all seem pretty small, but I'll never forget holding that massive 1911 in my little kid hands! That stands as one of my favorite firearms memories, along with the first time he let me hold and shoot his model 1912 Winchester pump 12 gauge. It was duck gun with a 30 inch full choke barrel...compared to my 22 rifle it just seemed to go on and on and on forever! It was like the front bead was lost in the clouds! I still get that feeling when I shoulder that old shotgun.

First time I held a polymer gun I have to say I was shocked by how light it was... always looked heavier... you know evil black things that kill peopel must be big and heavy. oh well... I have to say the first pistol I can remember touching was the IMI Jehrico... that damn thing ways a ton... (I shot once before that but it was middle school and I don't remember what my impressions where).... I guess it is all perception.

Fire a T/C Contender in .45-70 sometime. Large handgun, but very light. After you touch off that first Remington 300 gr round, if it seemed little to you, it won't anymore, promise.
