I have been considering getting a 9mm for awhile. I like the Glock 17, but I want to compare it to some other 9mm's. I know the 1911 has a reliable service record as a 45, is it just as reliable as a 9mm? Do any of you recommend on 9mm 1911 manufacturer over another?

My Springfield 1911 (9mm) has been completely reliable. It gets dirty quickly with UMC ammo, so I might recommend a different brand of ammo if you do get one from them. They also probably have the least expensive 9mm, at about ~$700-800. I got mine for $625 used.

I have a Kimber TacPro II (Cmdr size) and an SA EMP (Officer's size). both are sweet, accurate, reliable, but not inexpensive. You didn't mention purpose, both of mine are CCW pistols. Kimber, SA, Colt, STI, others make fine full-sized 9mm 1911 platforms, too.

I know your asking about 1911's, but if your looking into 9mm single action pistols make sure to include the Hi-Power in the running

I gotta agree on that, give consideration to a Hi Power.

Wow what a nice gun.

the general rule of thumb with 1911s are that they work best with 5" barrels and in .45acp, this is not to say that other models don't work but the best results are typically seen with the above.

i am a huge springfield fan and if i was in the market for a 9mm 1911 i would go sa all the way.

Springfield makes a fine full-size 9mm 1911A1-style pistol. But if it's a 9mm Service Pistol you're after...don't miss the chance to shoot a Browning Hi-Power or a CZ 75B. They're the Homecoming Queens in a market full of Trolls.

Enter_Narne,

I am a big fan of 1911s and a big fan of 1911s in 9mm caliber. Probably my favorite of all is the Springfield EMP. My most reliable full-size 9mm 1911s are also of Springfield manufacture, though they generally don't have the sex appeal of the Kimbers. But the problem with my Kimbers, and I have several nice ones, is that every one has had to be "tweaked" just a bit by a smith after being purchased new. And that is frustrating given the price you have to pay for them. Now, once my Kimbers were slightly adjusted, they performed extremely well. My favorite of that group is the Aegis Custom in 9mm. It gets attention in every crowd.

Despite all of this, I have turned (perhaps temporarily) toward the hi-cap 9mms that can be carried cocked and locked. My newest acquisition is the AR-24 from Armalite, and the next purchase will likely be a CZ 75 compact. I like the AR-24 much, but I question whether it will become a big seller, making after-market parts and accessories difficult or impossible to acquire. The CZ is a bit better in that regard, though obviously not in the same category as the 1911.

So, I remain a big 9mm 1911 fan, but those hi-cap CZs (original and "refined") are sure nice guns as well.

The only 9mm 1911 I've shot has been the SA. IMO, if you're looking for a single action 9mm, go w/ th BHP ;)

If you are considering the Glock 17, definitely take a look at the Glock 19. The 19 is much more balanced and dimensioned properly IMNSHO.

If your goal is to outshoot your buddies and to try and shoot the smallest groups. STI Targetmaster is the way to go without a doubt.

For CCW I have a Kimber Ultra Aegis II in 9mm. Nice Pistol. Shoots accurate & functions great.

My home weapon is a full size Springfield 1911 in 9mm. More accurate than the 3" Kimber. Operates flawlessly.

My wife's CCW is a Springfield EMP. A bit more accurate than my Kimber, but does not have as nice a carry melt.
