Police are questioning a Florida man who shot two men he says were trying to enter his apartment through a sliding glass door.

According to local papers, Eddie Nelson, 58, told investigators he was sitting in his apartment yesterday afternoon when the men tried to break in through a rear slider. Nelson reportedly grabbed a pistol and fired several rounds after the would-be burglars pointed something at him.


The wounded men then took off running. One collapsed after about 50 yards and died. The other man was found in the Lauderhill, Fla., apartment complex and was taken to the hospital for emergency surgery.

According to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, detectives have not determined if Nelson was justified in pulling the trigger.

"We are not calling it anything right now because there are too many questions," Broward Sheriff's Office spokesman Hugh Graf said. "We are going to wait until all the facts come in."

Broward County. Hmm. Not gonna say anything mean, but I can guess the color, political persuasions and economic status of nearly all the people involved.

Broward and Miami counties gave Kerry nearly all of his votes in FL, ditto Gore before that. They are also the source of all the anti-gun legislation that gets produced in this state. Thankfully the other 95% of legislators are much more conservative.

When does the new Stand-Your-Ground law go into effect? Why are they even waffling about on this break-in? Those thugs didn't have the resident's health and welfare in mind when they smashed in, that's for sure.

Broward County is sort of the New Jersey of Florida. They are the only ones that would hem and haw over whether some guy shooting intruders is a good shoot or not.

The rest of Florida doesnt really give two ????s about home invaders suffering tragic accidents. Stand Your Ground is going to save people like that homeowner a lot of lawyer time when the DA might otherwise make the wrong call.

However, it sounds like a pretty reasonable and neutral response for them to give to the press. We have read plenty of statements that were not only not neutral but were downright antagonistic toward the person exercising his right to self defense.

I spent 3 months as a Senior Medical Student in Dade County hospital in the ER. I was a awful place. Makes one wish they were a vet. One corner of the room would have people with black charcoal all smeared on their faces and the floor and walls as that was the minor OD place, one corner had all the asthma patients with IV's hanging and getting their breathing treatments, other corner had those with nausea and vomiting holding their basins, final corner was anyone else. I saw many GSW to the head. All died. Little was done as there was nothing to do. It was a nasty place and dangerous as heck outside. I had a guard walk me to and from my car. I will NEVER go back. Now if Broward County is worse I shudder.

Heh, I was in Broward county the other day and was still impressed with the numerical quantity of available shooting ranges to go to when I was there. Still, like one poster has said, I can pretty much picture what the situation was here.

In NJ a man shot a BG on his front porch and was completely exonerated. The jury ruled that the front porch consituted part of the house. (This case from my lawyer during a 'legal use of force' meeting I had with him.)

Recently, another NJ man shot 2 guys who were breaking into a backyard storage shed. The grand jury 'no billed' him.
