I have a Mosin-Nagant M38. The barrel has been counterbored - roughly 3/4", which is typical for this era.
There is no good muzzle brake made for the M38 (as opposed to the M44), however, I was thinking that I could simply port the barrel to achieve the same effect. One hole on top, two on the sides, or something like that. Since the porting would be in the counterbored area, the rifling won't be harmed.
What do you all think?

(a) Yes, I am modifying a military surplus weapon, defiling history, etc. I have several M-Ns that are in perfect as-issued condition - this one I bought to have fun with.
(b) I would not be doing this work - I'd take it to a local, well-regarded gunsmith.
