:confused:I came to this question last night when I was cleaning up my reloading bench I found a case of long forgoten 38 SPECIAL ammo. I loaded it about 5 years ago when I first got into bullet casting. The bullets look terrible because I didn't have a clue what to do just cast em. They were fairly accuarte if I rember right. But I got to thinking how long dose powder last in a case. I have fired surplus ammo that was 40 years old thur a SKS but they are sealed both primer and bullet. That comes to the 2nd question dose seealed ammo last longer than unsealed ammo. And if so what is a substance which can be used that will not kill the powder or primers. THANKS

GOD BLESS

I have fired handloaded ammo that was 20+ years old and it all worked just fine.

I had 38 SPL, 44 MAG and 45 ACP both lead and jacketed.

Did not have a single problem.

Mine was all stored under good conditions.

Most ammunition can be stored almost indefinitely and it will still work just fine. When I was in the Navy in the 1970's, we were shooting .50 Cal in our M2 Brownings that had been produced in 1943, then re-packed in 1946 and put in storage. Never had a dud round out of any of it.
