Private Contractor Work

I feel for several reasons that I need to serve in Iraq or another hostile area.

Well, if that's what you really want, I think that the "Légion Etrangère" might really be an option for you. You will certainly serve in a "hostile area".

Blackwater is probably the most well known of the private contracting groups. They pay very well but if anything ever happens to you in the field, well you're on your own. They have little or no liability concerns even though they're being sued by the families of those guys who were strung up and burned on that bridge in Fallujah. Their contract begins and ends with you personally, not your family.

So, be prepared for that hard reality, if it matters to you.

One thing you definitely want to check out is the insurance companies they use for kidnapping. I work for a company that has this insurance for all of its employees who serve in hostile areas. An employee of my company and an employee of another company were both kidnapped overseas (not Iraq) and the employee of the other company was shot and killed in front of our guy not because his company wouldnt pay up, but because the insurance company was taking to long to pay. Our guy came home in ok shape after his captures were paid. On another note, the pay rate is now $7000.00 a week including hazard pay, and high enough that he is now going back again..to the same place...

I just feel like it was something that I was suppose to do but never got a chance to.

Not to rain on your parade.....
Perhaps the fact that you were injured was a sign that its NOT
what your supposed to do.

I have found that looking/listening to whats going on around you
reveals more than the spoken word.

Good luck with whatever you choose and thanks for your service.

I've always thought that was a specialty of the Marines?? What gives??

They still provide security at the embassies. The private companies will
often do movement, though, in high risk countries. Not everyone gets to
go directly to the embassy by air :D

Armorgroup had a good rep when I was in Iraq a couple years back. All the
ones I met at the time were from the UK.

It would be interesting to know the average age of the contractors for each
agency.

ArmorGroup was who I worked for - good company. My age was 40, some late 20's, most were 30's and up; there were also a few guys in their 50's that were real hard men, too - don't mess with those grandpas ;)

AndyC,

Actually, I was more impressed by the agencies who had "older" ppl working
for them. The Armorgroup guys I met were brit with few in their late 20s
but mostly 30s. Some of the US companies had guys who looked like they
just finished their first military service contract, signed on w/ X, and had
been in Baghdad < 6mos. Various co's had a mix of US/UK in their 40s and
even 50s (often management). I always appreciated places to visit that had
their own grills, even if steak nite was only once/week. Good thing the various
co's had different nites :D
